About Barbara Windsor
Barbara had a romantic liaison with Reggie Kray, a notorious English gangster, in the 1960s.
She has been awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire).
Barbara appeared in just nine out of the thirty Carry On films.
Barbara originally based Peggy's character on a mixture of Violet Kray (the Kray brothers' mother), Mike Reid's wife and her own mother.
Barbara appeared in several Carry On films, most famously Carry On Camping.
Her other film credits include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and A Study In Terror. One of her earliest appearances was as an unnamed schoolgirl in 1954's The Belles Of St. Trinian's.
On TV, she played the saucy Nancy in Worzel Gummidge, and made guest appearances in Dad's Army and One Foot In The Grave
In 2000, she made a brief cameo appearance as herself in Cor Blimey, a drama about her relationship with Carry On co-star Sid James
She was profiled on This Is Your Life in 1992.
In May 2009, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievment Award at the British Soap Awards. It was presented to her by the actors who have played her on-screen sons, Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden.
