Your Reviews: Series 6, Story 3: The Fall

Trevor Eve as Boyd and Sue Johnston as Grace

We asked for your comments on Waking The Dead, you said:

"The Opus Dei! Corrupted bankers! Corrupted minds!

I think that this episode really captured an essense of this century's fascination with religious groups such as Opus Dei.

Yet it was not a stereotypical view of them, as so much more was involved with in the plotline such as adoption, drug running, corruption in the market. A very enjoyable watch."

Victoria Reese, London

"The mystery of Mel is a really clever twist."
"Waking the Dead continues to be one of the most brilliant and intelligent pieces of television.

The characterisation in this show is superb. Grace and Boyd have always been excellently drawn but now the subtleties between Spencer and Stella are clear for all to see. Do I sense a Spenella union?

The mystery of Mel is a really clever twist to the series and something I wouldn't have expected. The writing of the programme is amazing. The dialogue is really sharp, witty, funny, and the actors are just as good.

Although I doubt Opus Dei liked it as much as I did."

Hannah Jane, Liverpool

"I'm a Roman Catholic, not a member of Opus Dei; I do, however know three members very well, have read the rules and looked into the history of the organisation. I've also read The Da Vinci Code*, which is about as accurate as comparing the BBC to Lord Haw Haw*.

I was very diasppointed by the most recent episode, which plumbed the depths of sensationalism in reproducing the book's lies about Opus Dei. Grow up chaps."

Anton Borg, Cirencester

"This series seems to be concentrating on the bizarre."
"This series seems to be concentrating on the bizarre, particulalry this story, which stretched the imagination to breaking point.

Two bodies behind a locked door since 1992 in an occupied building and never discovered?

Then we were suddenly expected to believe they were all tied up with Roberto Calvi*, the Vatican Bank and Opus Dei. It was like that old pot-boiler, The Da Vinci Code.

Please get back to the excellent scripts of the earler series."

Richard, Oxford

"The Fall was another great story, gripping and entertaining. It's a shame there wasn't more information on why the bank collapsed - but then that would probably have required another episode to explain.

I think the complaint from Opus Dei about this story is without merit. The programme portrayed the characters as being just the same as the rest of us, with the same drives, emotions and imperfections. Are they really suggesting that every follower of Opus Dei is incapable of such faults?"

Dan Evans, Bath
