Your Reviews: Series 6, Story 1: Wren Boys

Trevor Eve as Boyd and Sue Johnston as Grace

We asked for your comments on Waking The Dead, you said:

"The story was intriguing and intelligent and the acting was first class."
"Waking the Dead is back and as brilliant as ever. Wren Boys was a fantastic start to the new series of what is surely the best programme on TV. The story was intriguing and intelligent and the acting was first class.

Tara FitzGerald's character, Eve, seems to be a good addition to the cast. It was nice to see a bit of continuity, with the references to Mel and Boyd's son, although it would be nice to have Felix's departure explained. And it does appear that the events of the last series, involving Spencer, have been forgiven or forgotten.

Trevor Eve and Sue Johnston were fantastic together as always, I can't wait for the next episode.

Plus, thanks to the BBC for the new interactive service."

May, Cumbria

"A great start to a new series. It's good to see Spence back on the team, although his attitude now seems to mirror Boyd's. Eve seems rather distant from the group at the moment. Hopefully that will change. The only thing missing was the explanation of where Felix has disappeared to.

I didn't see Joe being Bridget's father coming - I thought it was Davy's.

The mystery of Mel's necklace is a fab twist to this series."

Sophie McShane, Leeds, West Yorkshire

"Never have I seen such Paddywhackerrry - the rough but made good Oirish builder, his god-fearing night watchman ("sure twas the devil himself"), not to mention the just-stepped out of Lord of the Rings Irish travellers (who really are descended from the druids, bodhrans and all).

Watching this last night in Dublin, we practically fell off the couch laughing (and that didn't even include the stigmata nun). The entire show was so off-the-wall in terms of everything it attempted to portray that I'm surprised the actors could keep straight faces."

Declan Martin, Dublin

"This is one of the most sympathetic representaions of Irish culture I've seen British television.

The significence of the Claddagh ring, the funeral pyre of the caravan, the Wren Boy tradition (correctly associated with St Stephen's Day, not Boxing Day), the relationships between mothers and their children, and between fathers and sons, even the traveller culture, were all accurately portrayed.

Well done, so much better than EastEnders' portrayal years ago of the Irish Fowlers as incestuous inbreds."

James D, Wales

"I was saddened to see rottweilers shown in such a bad light."
"I was saddened to see rottweilers shown in such a bad light yet again. I suggest that the programme makers try to understand this breed before showing them in such a bad light, especially after the recent press.

As a passionate owner, following this episode, when I walk my girl, yet more people will cross the road."

Lisa Hampson, Northamptonshire

"As an avid Waking the Dead fan, I was eagerly anticipating the start of the new series. I would like to raise one major gripe, why leave the previous series on such a major cliffhanger, then scarcely refer to it in the first episode of the new series? I think the only reference was the tattoo round the bullet wound.

If I was in a cynical frame of mind I would say that the cliffhanger was just a way of giving the actor who plays Spence time to decide whether he wanted to come back for another series or not."

David Rios-Hunter, London

"I have always been a big fan of Waking the Dead, and thought Wren Boy's was fantastic. It filled me with every emotion from tears, laughter and anger. The cast and script were superb."

Julie McCafferty, Glasgow

"Fantastic start to the new series. Suspenseful and a really interesting topic. Drama galore and a real sense of teamwork. However, I do miss Boyd's outbrusts a bit. Still, early days yet."

Sandra Wright, Kent, UK
