Two Thousand Acres of Sky

Kenny (Paul Kaye) and Abby (Michelle Collins)

Two Thousand Acres of Sky tells the story of single mum Abby Wallace, who escapes her inner city lifestyle with her two children to a small Scottish village.

Abby (Michelle Collins)

The local Council of Ronansay has decided to close the primary school. It has only three pupils and needs five to stay open. The islanders fear that if the school closes, the young families will move away, leaving the island to die off with the older inhabitants.

Led by Douglas Raeburn (Michael Carter), owner of the local hotel, they decide to advertise for a family with two children to come and live on the island and run a Bed and Breakfast.

Abby (Michelle Collins), spots the appeal but needs a husband in order to fulfil the required criteria for living on Ronansay. She persuades best friend Kenny Marsh (Paul Kaye) to pretend they're married and accompany her and her two children to the island. However, keeping up the charade isn't easy, especially when Abby arouses the interest of the local salmon farmer, Alistair (John Straiton).

Kenny (Paul Kaye)

In the second series Abby's flourishing relationship with Alistair proves difficult for Kenny to handle, especially when Abby suggests that Kenny find somewhere else to live. Despite her financial worries, Abby's relationship with Alistair is growing stronger and seeing them together prompts Kenny to consider Abby's suggestion.

The third series sees Abby and Kenny's relationship finding a platonic middle ground. But Kenny is feeling restless - he needs to move on but feels unable to until Abby feels secure without him being around. The perfect opportunity presents itself when Abby's Ex, Robbie (Michael Hodgson) gets in touch and wants to see his kids. Abby refuses to let him back into their lives. So Kenny, secretly, heads for London to find Robbie.

Alistair (John Straiton)

When Robbie arrives he is expectedly met with much hostility and Abby is furious with Kenny for bringing him to the island. However, it isn't long before Robbie convinces Abby he has changed and they give their relationship another chance.

Before Kenny leaves the island he decides to go out to sea to mount a salmon catch in the hope of raising enough money to return back to London. But as he's out to sea, the boat takes on water and he abandons ship and manages to struggle ashore an inlet.

The next morning the alarm is raised that Kenny has disappeared and the coastguard begin a search as the islanders wait helplessly. They eventually find the boat and his dead body next to an unlit fire on the shore.
