Kevin McKidd

Kevin McKidd

Kevin burst onto the acting scene in Trainspotting, and went on to appear in films such as Hideous Kinky, Topsy Turvy and Kingdom of Heaven. He's a regular face in BBC dramas such as Gunpowder, Treason and Plot, Rome and The Virgin Queen.

What's he been in?

Kevin stars in Rome as Lucius Vorenus, a Roman soldier who's ordered into the wilds of Gaul to retrieve a standard, but ends up embroiled in the political machinations of the wealthiest city in the world. Kevin also plays the Duke of Norfolk in The Virgin Queen, a dramatisation of the life of Queen Elizabeth I, starring Anne Marie Duff.

Kevin first came to fame in the smash-hit film, Trainspotting. The film also starred Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Kelly MacDonald and Johnny Lee Miller

Kevin went on to appear in a range of major films, including Hideous Kinky with Kate Winslet, horror film Dog Soldiers, and the Mike Leigh film Topsy Turvy, in which he played a conceited operetta star, alongside star names such as Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent, Shirley Henderson and Dexter Fletcher.

He starred with Helen McCrory in Anna Karenina. Both actors then went on to appear in North Square, a Channel 4 legal drama which also featured Rupert Penry-Jones.

Since then Kevin's been busy on film and TV with roles in De-Lovely, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Kingdom of Heaven, as well as a star-studded adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby.

Did you know?

Kevin originally went to university to study engineering, but he found he enjoyed acting with the drama group more, so he left to study acting at Queen Margaret's College.

He claims he turned to acting because he was fat and bad at sports as a child. The first time he ever went on stage everyone laughed. He admits that he wasn't sure if it was because he was funny, or because he was so fat!

He's a patron of Out of the Darkness Theatre Company. His mum is the administrator of the company.

His favourite film is Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy.

Tommy, his Trainspotting character, was the only main character not to feature in the poster campaign. This was because Kevin went on holiday straight after filming finished, and missed the photo-shoot.

Personal Details

Kevin is married with two children.

He was born in Elgin in Scotland in 1973.
