Damian’s first big break came with a part in Warriors a harrowing story set in the former Yugoslavia, which also helped to launch the career of Matthew Macfadyen.
With his British accent, many were initially surprised by him being cast as Major Richard Winters in big-budget US mini-series Band of Brothers.
However, he was universally well received in the part and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Mini-Series. Directed by Tom Hanks, the series followed Damian's character leading Easy Company through the liberation of Europe.
In 2000 Damian starred with drama favourites Sarah Parish and Amanda Holden in Hearts and Bones. Damian's character was devastated to find that wife Emma (Dervla Kirwan), was lusting after his brother (Hugo Speer).
Other credits include the remake of The Forsyte Saga, Much Ado About Nothing, part of the ShakespeaRe-Told season where he was reunited with Sarah Parish, and the title role in Jeffrey Archer: The Truth. A satirical flight of fancy, it saw the peer living a far-fetched life including affairs with Mrs Thatcher and Princess Diana.
Although best known for his drama work Damian played Simon Fuller in the 2003 Christmas Special of The Big Impression, has hosted Have I Got News For You and took part in Ant and Dec’s pro-celebrity football series in the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup.
