Shelley Conn as Ashika Chandiramani

Ashika Chandiramani (Shelley Conn)

Her parents came over from Uganda in the 70's and shortly afterwards had Ashika and three boys. The only one of her siblings to make it to university, Ashika thrived and became involved with student politics. Later, as a young researcher at CCHQ, she was perfectly placed to meet key players in the Tory party. These included newly promoted shadow Junior Minister James Northcote who took her with him as his Special Advisor.

She enjoyed the attention of this successful older man when they first started working together. She's never been bothered about falling in love - she just trusted that when the right man came along she'd be ready. She's open, funny, unpretentious, and not outwardly ambitious. She just believes that whatever she goes for she'll get.

When she meets Scott, she gets a glimpse of a normal relationship, and the potential for love scares her a bit. Unlike Scott, she doesn't have a problem with him being 'the enemy'. For her, being a Tory is about a practical set of solutions for how the country should be run. She's immune to the traditional tribalism of the two parties and thinks it's all a bit immature.
