Alistair McGowan is wisecracking detective Gil Mayo in a series of intriguing and entertaining whodunnits.
Mayo's a brilliant detective, with a wicked black humour. He leads a close-knit team; laddish DC Martin Kite (Huw Rhys) and nerdy Scene of Crime officer Harriet "Anorak" Tate (Loo Brealey).
Making up the team is new arrival DS Jones. To Mayo's horror, she turns out to be Alex (Jessica Oyelowo), his ex-girlfriend and first love. Mayo can't help flirting with her, but will it really go any further than that?
Together, the team tackle a series of intricate and complicated crimes, each bringing their own strengths.
Gil's a master crime-solver. He has a pedantic attention to detail, and is obsessed with figuring things out. Alex favours using instinct, and to Mayo's annoyance, she's often right.
Backing them up, Anorak actually enjoys the laborious nit-picking of evidence sifting, where a hair here and a speck there can mean the difference between an open case and a conviction. And Kite may be vain and inexperienced, but he brings an enthusiasm and tenacity to solving cases.
Mayo is based on a well-known series of novels by Marjorie Eccles, a crime writer who also pens romances under the pseudonyms Judith Bordill and Jennifer Hyde. She's written thirteen Gil Mayo mysteries so far.
