Tom got his first break whilst still training at the Drama Centre London,* noted for its Method-oriented* teaching. Despite not having finished his course, he landed a role on World War II drama Band of Brothers, playing Private First Class John Janovec. Continuing the military theme, Tom's next part was that of Lance Twombly in Black Hawk Down. Starring Josh Harnett and Ewan McGregor, this Ridley Scott movie told the story of a disastrous 1993 US military raid on the Somalian capital Mogadishu.

Swapping soldiering for sci-fi, Tom's next big role was as Praetor Shinzon, a villanous clone of Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard in big screen Star Trek flop Nemesis. Acting alongside Trek stalwarts Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, his part as the twisted, black-clad ruler of the Romulans required him to shave his head. Interviewed about the role by IGN.com*, Tom admitted he'd never been much of a Trek fan.
Christmas 2005 sees Tom appearing in a BBC film of Sweeney Todd, starring Ray Winstone as the barber with an unusual understanding of the phrase "short back and sides". Tom plays upstanding Bow Street Runner Matthew Payne, working for Sir John Fielding, played by David Warner.* Ironically, Matthew owes his life to the canibalistic clipper.

2006 sees Tom don doublet and hose as Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester in the BBC retelling of Elizabeth I's life, The Virgin Queen. He then moves more up to date in Gideon's Daughter playing the PR guru's slimy assistant, Andrew.
He gets togged up in period costume again for Sofia Coppola-directed film Marie Antoinette* (2006), starring Shirley Henderson as the cake-endorsing royal. Tom plays the dandified Conte de Rohan, a French nobleman obsessed with getting closer to his queen, whatever the cost.

Other films Tom has appeared in include horror flick LD50: Lethal Dose* and a role as Clarkie in Lock-Stock-alike gangster movie Layer Cake. In the latter he co-starred with Daniel Craig, who played XXXX. No, that's not his rating, it's his character's name!
Tom has extensive theatre experience, which includes the roles of Michael in Festen at the Almeida*, Lucca in Blood at The Royal Court Theatre*, and Skank in In Arabia We'd All Be Kings at the Hampstead Theatre*/Royal Court Downstairs, the last two performances winning him the 2003 Evening Standard* award for Outstanding Newcomer.
