Ray Winstone
Best known for a whole raft of hard-man roles, Ray Winstone's first part was in the acclaimed drama, Scum. He went on to star in Robin of Sherwood, Nil By Mouth, Sexy Beast, Henry VIII, Vincent and played Sweeney Todd in early 2006.

Ray landed his first role in Scum* by accident. He wasn't planning to audition, and had in fact decided to give up acting. But director, Alan Clarke*, saw him walking down a corridor and liked the way he moved. He took the lead role of Carlin in both the original TV drama and the later film version*.

He went on to work solidly as an actor, taking roles as diverse as Will Scarlet in Robin of Sherwood* and Kevin in Quadrophenia*He also starred in sitcoms such as Father Matthew's Daughter*, with James Bolam and Get Back*, in which one of his daughters was played by a young Kate Winslet*.
In the early 90s he appeared in the Ken Loach* film Ladybird Ladybird* and then in 1997 he took the role of Ray in Gary Oldman's* hard-hitting drama Nil By Mouth*, alongside Kathy Burke*. The role won Ray a BIFA* award as Best Actor, and he was also nominated for a BAFTA* in the same category.

He entered a very busy stage of his career and took a huge number of varied acting roles including starring in the shocking 1999 film The War Zone*, light-hearted comedy Fanny and Elvis* and gangster flick Sexy Beast*.
In 2003 he tried his hand at period drama, taking the role of Henry VIII* in a lush ITV drama about the life of the famous King. The all-star cast also featured Charles Dance, Joss Ackland* and David Suchet.

In 2005 Ray took the lead role in the ITV private detective drama, Vincent*. He kicked off 2006 by shaving his head to play murderous barber Sweeney Todd, and later in the year played a football boss in Channel 4's All In The Game.

He's married with three daughters. The two eldest, Lois and Jamie are both actresses.
