Phil DavisPhil Davis

Phil Davis first shot to fame in the cult film Quadrophenia. Since then he's appeared in huge range of TV dramas and films such as The Bounty. He put in a BAFTA-nominated performance in Vera Drake and starred in the award-winning Bleak House.

What's he been in?

  • Phil starred in 2005's all-star adaptation of Dickens' classic Bleak House, which won a BATFA for Best Drama Serial. He played Smallweed, an evil moneylender, who became involved with the nefarious dealings of Tulkinghorn, played by Charles Dance. The cast also included Gillian Anderson, Denis Lawson, Nathaniel Parker and Anna Maxwell-Martin.
  • In 2006, he stars alongside James Purefoy and Hugh Bonneville in Beau Brummell.

  • Phil featured in the cult movie Quadrophenia*, which was based on an album by The Who. The film starred Phil Daniels, Ray Winstone*, Leslie Ash and a whole host of British acting talent, as well as people from the music world such as Toyah and Sting.
  • His career took off and he played a huge range of roles throughout the 1980s and 90s. He was Prince John in the TV series Robin of Sherwood*, which starred Michael Praed as Robin Hood. He also took on Hollywood roles, starring in The Bounty*, alongside Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins* and Laurence Olivier.

  • Phil has regularly worked with legendary director Mike Leigh. In 1979 he appeared in Who's Who*, a drama in the BBC's Play for Today strand. He went on to star in Grown Ups* alongside Brenda Blethyn and in 1988 he starred as Cyril Bender in the film High Hopes*. He had a very small part in Secrets and Lies*, which starred Timothy Spall and then didn't work with Mike Leigh again until 2004.
  • In 2004 came Phil's much acclaimed performance in Vera Drake the Oscar-nominated* Mike Leigh film starring Imelda Staunton as a back-street abortionist. He won massive praise for his role, and won the Best Actor award at the British Independent Film Awards*. He was also nominated as the Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAs*.

  • Phil has appeared in a number of BBC dramas, including playing Lodge in eco-drama Fields of Gold, alongside Anna Friel and Bodies star Max Beesley*. In 2005, he starred as the slightly creepy Mr Eccles in Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky adapted from the book by Patrick Hamilton*. Mr Eccles was hoping to marry Ella, played by Sally Hawkins, but she eventually refused him. He is also coming up in the new Hollywood adaptation of Casanova*, starring Heath Ledger*.

  • Phil has worked as a director as well as an actor. Programmes he's directed include Prime Suspect V*, Real Women* and the films I.D.* and Hold Back The Night*.

  • Phil's married to actress Eve Matheson*, they have one daughter, Amy.
