Paul's first TV appearance was in popular kids' series Children's Ward, in which he had three lines. He followed this with a part in another children's drama, The Biz, which followed the fortunes of a group of drama school students and was tagged Fame for the Nineties.

In 1996 he shot to fame playing tortured teen Joe Wicks in EastEnders, giving a touching and disturbing performance of a young man in mental decline. He turned up in Albert Sqaure looking for his father David Wicks, but not long after managing to establish a relationship with his dad, he began acting strangely and was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
After leaving EastEnders, he played a lead role in the BBC's Manchester-set cop drama City Central, wielding the truncheon of PC Terry Sydenham for two years before moving on.

Paul also played the leads in drama The Passion and WWI film The Trench. Last year he starred opposite Julie Walters in the BAFTA-winning The Wife of Bath, part of the BBC's acclaimed adaptation of Canterbury Tales, as well as playing Lord Darnley in Jimmy McGovern's Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
