What's he been in?

  • John stars as lazy but talented barrister Charlie Darling in new legal drama New Street Law, alongside John Hannah, Lisa Faulkner and Paul Freeman.
  • He appeared as Terry Corlette in 2004 musical drama Blackpool, starring David Morissey and Sarah Parish.

  • John started out as a comedian - he went to university with Steve Coogan and one of his first roles was as Fat Bob in Coogan's Paul Calf series. John went on to write and star in three series of The Fast Show. Possibly his most memorable character was ultra-cool cat Louis Balfour who introduced Jazz Club with an oily "nice" or "cool". Other comedy shows he's had parts in include The Day Today and Radio 1 show Fist of Fun.
  • John Thomson as Louis Balfour in 'The Fast Show'

  • His comedy-drama CV includes playing dim landlord Ken in three series of Men Behaving Badly, Barry in minicab misadventure series Roger Roger, Harold in Station Jim* and Eddie in Playing the Field*.

  • It was the role of Pete in the ITV series Cold Feet*, co-starring James Nesbitt*, Robert Bathurst*, Fay Ripley* and Helen Baxendale* that really made him a star. A warm, emotional show, Cold Feet ran for four series, twice winning the British Comedy award. It wasn't afraid to mix tragedy with comedy, as Helen Baxendale's character was killed in a sudden car crash.

  • John's been doing voice-over work since the days of Spitting Image, including flowerpot man Bill in the remake of classic kids' show Bill and Ben, and Mr Windfall in Wallace and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit*.

  • Big screen parts include Nathan in The Young Poisoner's Handbook*, Charles in Factory Records story 24 Hour Party People, and sadly, a foreman in the woefully awful Fat Slags film.
