In 1985 John moved into Brookside Close as Billy, elder brother of Jimmy and a member of the renowned Corkhill family. He stayed on the Close for five years, before his character married Sheila Grant (Sue Johnston) and left for a new life.

John played the part of Tonbridge in 1940's period drama The Cazalets, a series charting the wide ranging effect of the Second World War on a prosperous family.
Following his departure from Brookside, John appeared in numerous dramas including Rich Deceiver with Lesley Dunlop, in which he played the unemployed husband of a woman who won the lottery and didn't tell him.
Among John's multitude of screen credits are appearances in primetime favourites The Bill, Peak Practice, Where the Heart Is, Heartbeat, Cracker and Kavanagh QC.

John returned to Merseyside in 2001 as Merseybeat's Inspector Jim Oulton. His character didn't have an easy time, with his strong work ethic causing problems in his marriage and family.
