Despite being the son of a famous actor, it didn't automatically mean he was destined to follow in his father's footsteps. "I didn't grow up with a burning desire to be an actor," he reveals. "I didn't act when I was at school. I was very shy and no-one in my family thought it was something I would naturally gravitate towards."
It was only when he was cast in a college production while attending North Carolina's Duke University that he got the acting bug. After leaving the USA and returning to England, he spent several years working on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company*.

Jared made his screen debut in the 1989 film The Rachel Papers*, which starred Dexter Fletcher of Hotel Babylon and The Virgin Queen fame.
He admits to being very argumentative and loving a good fight.
