After leaving university, Hugh's acting career began with roles in TV favourites Dangerfield, Kavanagh QC and as Rachel's toy-boy Danny in Cold Feet.
Hugh was cast as the adult David Copperfield in a 2000 TV adaptation which also starred Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind) as James Steerforth and Sally Field (Forrest Gump) as Aunt Betsy Trotwood.

In 2000, Hugh starred with Daniel Deronda co-star Hugh Bonneville in Madame Bovary. Again, they played two men fascinated by the same woman, in this case the passionate Emma Bovary played by Frances O'Connor.
Hugh has branched out into Hollywood films, appearing in Ridley Scott's graphic war drama Black Hawk Down. He has also filmed crime caper Tempo, enjoying steamy scenes with Melanie Griffith and Rachael Leigh Cook.
One of Hugh's latest projects, Ella Enchanted is described as a modern day fairytale, and his co-stars certainly have the right pedigree, they include Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) and Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries).
Another high-profile enterprise, The Sleeping Dictionary was shot in the remote jungles of Malaysia, and co-stars Brenda Blethyn and Bob Hoskins.

Hugh played the brooding Daniel Deronda in Andrew Davies' adaptation of George Eliot's novel. While filming on location in Malta, Hugh spent much of his time in the shade to preserve his character's fair complexion.
