David TennantDavid Tennant

Familiar to millions as the star of Doctor Who, David's TV career stretches back to the early 1990s, with parts in Takin' Over The Asylum and Rab C Nesbitt. Since 2004, he's had a string of high profile roles, including He Knew He Was Right, Blackpool, and Casanova.

What's he been in?

  • David made his Doctor Who debut, regenerating from Christopher Eccleston, in June 2005. Since then, he's been at the helm of the TARDIS, alongside companion Rose, played by Billie Piper.

  • As DI Carlisle in 2004's Blackpool, he tried to frame Ripley Holden (David Morrissey) for murder so he could steal his wife, Natalie (Sarah Parish).
  • While in 2005, he won the hearts of women everywhere in his role as legendary lover, Casanova.

  • In He Knew He Was Right, he had the opposite effect when he played the slimy Reverend Gibson.
  • One of his early roles on TV was Campbell in the acclaimed series Takin' Over The Asylum*, alongside Ken Stott.

  • He's done loads of work on the stage, including roles with prestigous companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company* and the National Theatre*. He was nominated for an Olivier Award* for the role of Jeff in Lobby Hero at the Donmar.
  • It was while he was appearing in The Pillowman at the National that he was spotted and offered a role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, playing Barty Crouch Jr.
  • Other drama credits include the live re-make of The Quatermass Experiment and Secret Smile, both in 2005. In 2006, he played Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the drama documentary The Romantics.
  • Did you know?

  • David's been a life-long fan of Doctor Who, and even had a little Tom Baker doll when he was a child. He cites Tom as one of his acting inspirations. Before landing the title role, David appeared in several Doctor Who audio stories, and the BBC webcast The Scream of Shalka.

  • He has auditioned 16 times for a role in detective drama Taggart*, but never got a part!

  • He used to lodge with Arabella Weir from The Fast Show, and is now godfather to her youngest child. Coincidentally, she has played a female Doctor Who.

  • He learnt to act at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama*.

  • David's birthday is 18th April - his real name is David McDonald.

  • He used to date Anne-Marie Duff of Shameless* and The Virgin Queen fame. His current girlfriend is the actress Sophia Myles.
