Interviews: Luke Bailey
Exclusive interviews with the Casualty cast
Q. How did you feel coming into work on your first day?
A. I was very nervous. I really was, because as a kid I'd watched Casualty. Since I was about 6 years old I wanted to be an actor and I remember one of my ambitions was that I hadn't really been an actor until I died on Casualty. Coming into such a huge established programme with such a high calibre of people made me scared. I was nervous and excited.
Q. Why did you decide so early from the age of six that you wanted to be an actor?
A. I don't know .We've been raised by television and film and I think this has been a huge part of my life and our culturer. But it was an advert when the boy stands on the Yellow Pages and kisses the girl. I enjoyed acting and got parts in the school plays.
Q. Did your family ever say 'Snap out of it'?
A. I have ridiculously supportive parents and they've never discouraged me from doing anything. They wouldn't let me get an agent until I was 16. They wouldn't let me audition for anything which took longer than two days until I'd finished college. At 19 and 20 these are the only years I've been auditioning for drama. I did a lot of photo shoots and long day affairs. I went to a comprehensive which did a lot of performing arts. I got a place at university the same day I heard I got the part on U Get Me.
Q. Was that a dilemma?
A. No, I think my focus has always been on the performing arts side of things. I like writing. I got a place at Manchester on a Writing and Television Production course. I thought I'd gain more experience working 6 months on a drama than I would doing a course.
Q. What sort of reaction did you get from you peers?
A. I think some of them thought I was take the Mick! They didn't believe me. But they're your friends and they're always support of whatever you do.
