A poverty-stricken childhood steeled Duncan's drive to make his fortune from an early age. After his naval career, which included a spell in military prison, Duncan drifted from job to job ending up in Jersey. It was here that he made the decision to turn his life around.
He began his entrepreneurial life by trading in cars, but it was with an ice cream van purchased for £450 that he changed the course of his life. With 'Duncan's Super Ices', he set out to become the king of the 99 and eventually sold the business for £28,000, founding a nursing home business instead.
He sold his nursing home business for £46 million in 1996. During the last 10 years has expanded into health clubs with the Bannatyne's chain to his name, and also owns bars, hotels and property. Bannatyne's is now the largest independent chain of health clubs in the UK. Duncan's latest venture is Sensory Spa, a chain of luxury health and wellbeing spas.
Quoted on The Sunday Times 2008 Rich List as having wealth to the tune of £310m, Duncan holds an OBE and was recently awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) from Glasgow Caledonian University for services to business and charity.
UNICEF and Scottish International Relief have benefited from Duncan's involvement and he has recently launched the Bannatyne Charitable Trust to support worthwhile causes.
A Dragon in the Den since the first series, Duncan recently appeared on BBC Two's Duncan Bannatyne Takes On Tobacco when he visited Africa to investigate the tactics used by big tobacco companies in selling cigarettes to children.

i find it fascinating that he achieved so much from so little

Duncan is a classic rags to ritches entrepreneur. in the series showing the Dragons lives outside the den Duncan has a very modest lifestyle and built up a great buisness from scratch
Wow. What an amazing life and accomplishment. Apart from James, you are my favourite dragon. Struggling to get a job, you have proven that a history doesn't mean it's the end of you.
A great career history and a natural at making money from anything, you really know your stuff.
Must agree a great role model. I think that Duncan used a method called vision board. Where he would use pictures to visulise his future. Does anyone know if this is true. I have used the same method when i set up my own chocolate factory and it worked, still use it today and im now teaching young people.
59 and still bonny. And he has the best accent of the Dragons. What amazes me about all these dragons, well, the male ones at least, is where did they find the time to fit in having so many children?
duncan is the best dragon,
he's the oldest but looks the youngest!!
Dear Mr Bannatyne
What do you do when you find yourself having light bulb moments frequently, ideas for products that could boost sales for large branded companies, that you are convinced will be a winner.......
I am constantly throwing business ideas around in my head, it can be very frustrating. Your guidance or opinion in this matter would be much appreciated. Many Thanks.
I was born in Clydebank, and to see Duncan Bannatyne come from Clydebank and become what he is today is amazing, shows what motivation can do for you.
