Bournemouth Air Festival

It was all eyes to the skies as the town hosted its first Air Festival, as up to 750,000 poeple crowded on the seafront to watch the spectacular air displays above the town's beaches.

It was the first event of its kind to come to the beaches of Bournemouth, and even before the four day event had finished, another air festival for the following year had already been confirmed.

Bournemouth Air Festival Director Jon Weaver told BBC Radio Solent's Steve Harris: "We're lost for words, the festival was incredible.

"On the Wednesday afternoon I was thinking, 'Is anybody going to turn up to this?' but by Saturday I've never seen Bournemouth full of so many people in my life."

The festival will be back next year, from August 20 through to 23, which is the weekend before the August bank holiday.

Like many visitors to the air festival, Jon says he was disappointed that the Vulcan didn't make it.

He says: "We knew there were some issues, there was an undercarriage flap problem. They were working on it right up to the last moment but they couldn't get a senior engineer to pass the work that had been done."

"It would have been a lovely bit of 'icing on the cake' [for it to have appeared] but I think everybody still said the show was great. But we'll try to get back for next year's show."
