Danny Gibbons' brace was enough to see off the Poppies, despite a late rally which saw Scott Joyce notch his eleventh goal of the season. Goal hungry Brockenhurst launched an early offensive deep into the Poppies half. Poppies keeper, Jason Harvell, made a bold and towering jump to collect the ball – in the process cracking his knees together and dislocating his left kneecap. Play was halted for 7 minutes while Harvell received on pitch treatment. The unexplained absence of a substitute keeper led to the injured Harvell continuing play - despite his obvious discomfort. Harvell was tested within minutes, with a Brockenhurst corner. Luckily the ball was cleared and Scott Joyce broke free, alerting the sleepy Brockenhurst defence with a powering strike- which soared several yards to the right of the Brockenhurst goal.

Soon after Mark Dancer was presented with a sublime opportunity, but his header saw the ball clean over Brockenhurst’s goal. A Poppies throw-in led to rapid one touch play between Dancer and Benssaouda, with the latter making a break for goal only to be held back by Carl Woodward pulling his shirt. The resulting free kick was wasted, with the shot easily clearing Brockenhurst’s goal. Brockenhurst tightened their leash on the midfield, and Poppies found many of their passes intercepted and attacks quelled as Brockenhurst struck on the break. On 44 minutes a goal-line scramble allowed Danny Gibbons to slice the ball into the Poppies net, giving Brockenhurst the long sought lead they deserved. Just before the whistle, Poppies dangerman Lamin Dibba almost repeated Gibbons play at the Brockenhurst end, but his chance died in the keeper’s hands.

Bournemouth made an encouraging start in the second half, winning a free kick outside the box within seconds of kick off. But Brockenhurst’s defensive shield remained tight, and the ball was cleared. Within ten minutes of the restart, Gibbons gained his second, planting the ball into the Poppies net to give Brocks a two-goal cushion. This was the catalyst; Bournemouth sprung to life, with form consistent of that seen in earlier games. Spurred on by the two-goal deficit, some bright attacking play eventually led to a penalty for Poppies. Joyce stepped up and casually sent the ball cruising to the left, with the Brockenhurst keeper veering to the right. Despite five minutes extra time, the Poppies new-found determination wasn’t enough to gain them an equaliser and their cup hopes faded into the fog which had descended upon Victoria Park. The Poppies will rue this defeat, given their efforts in the previous round, where their epic display against Frome Town saw them scrape to victory in the second half of extra time. |
