Ian Mancey's well-placed strike was enough to give Winchester the advantage they had been looking for to see off their promotion rivals, and left the Poppies fourteen points behind City in the challenge for promotion. The first half saw both sides unable to finish several opportunities. The Poppies had good chances from both Scott Joyce - who had scored ten goals in his last six games, and Karim Benssaouda.
Joyce headed wide 14 minutes into the first half and with only minutes until half time, Benssaouda made a superb run towards the Winchester goal only to be foiled by a fine save by Winchester keeper Dave Hook. All eyes were on the exciting Benssaouda, not only because of his exceptional play, but also because of his sending off in the FA Vase match against Frome Town. After half time, Winchester stepped up their game, with high levels of possession and focused passing. The Poppies were unable to clear the ball from their own half, and City's Ian Mancey was able to take full advantage and open the scoring. Ten minutes later the Poppies were reduced to ten men, as Richard McCabe was sent off following a scuffle in the Winchester half. The visitors had an array of chances to extend their lead, with numerous crosses racing across the Poppies goal.
Bournemouth couldn’t maintain possession and found themselves constantly unable to break through the Winchester midfield. With just over 15 minutes left to play though Bournemouth had an excellent chance; Benssaouda broke through the Winchester defence with a well timed run, but once again it was Dave Hook's bravery which denied the lively Benssaounda. Despite renewed efforts from Bournemouth towards the end of the game, they were unable to get through the rigid Winchester defence, and had Jason Harvell to thank for keeping the score down. |
