On the up

The Olga club in Parkstone, Poole seems to be a hotbed of trampoline talent at the moment - Claire Wright has just won another national title and three members of the Stickland family are also bouncing towards the top of the sport.

The Stickland family from Poole have no less than three children competing in trampolining at a national level.

Ryan, 9, Kimberley, 14 and Sarah, 16 are part of an impressive team of trampolinists from the Olga Club in Parkstone.

Ryan started trampolining at the age of four and found the exercise has helped his breathing and eased his asthma.  Next year he will compete in the national Under 13 category - he is already proving to be an undoubted talent and has his sights set on the Olympics.

Sarah took up the sport to keep her fitness up when she was recovering from a broken arm she got while doing gymnastics - she finished 13th out of 54 in the UK nationals, while Kimberley is working to make grade one in the sport.

She says there is a certain amount of sibling rivalry: "It's quite hard sometimes because my little brother is kind of catching me up!"

They could do worse than aspire to folow in the footsteps of Claire Wright, the 25 year old is also a member of the Olga club and has just won five national titles in a row.

Her recent win in Birmingham is all the more of an achievement as she has overcome a serious back injury "I'm training up to five hours every day to stay at the top, there is a lot of sacrifices but I wouldn't change it because I enjoy it so much."

"People think the trampoline just throws you back up in the air but there is a lot of pressure on your whole body, you have to get up to eight metres high on the trampoline - so it's a tough sport."
