Live 8 in Bournemouth
Live 8 in Bournemouth

Live 8 on the BBC Big Screen

Thousands of music fans in Bournemouth watched all the action at the historic Live 8 concerts on a giant BBC Big Screen in Meyrick Park.

As the world's biggest music stars took part in epic concerts around the globe to put pressure on political leaders to tackle poverty in Africa, music fans in Bournemouth were able to be part of Live 8, thanks to a special BBC Big Screen relay of the concert.

The event at  Meyrick Park was organised by Bournemouth Borough Council.  The town was one of a number of venues around the UK, including Belfast, Inverness, Jersey and Manchester, which played host to a giant screen to show the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park on July 2nd.

The BBC Big Screen carried digital feeds of the BBC Television coverage of the London concert, as well as highlights from the other shows happening around the world.  The screen was also interactive, with the audience able post their text messages on the Bournemouth screen, and others around the country.

Read a selection of the Big Screen text messages.

As the early drizzle faded away, Meyrick Park was bathed in sunshine as the crowds watched all the bands and artists performing in Hyde Park including U2, Coldplay, Madonna, Snow Patrol, Travis and Robbie Williams -  enjoying all the atmosphere of the biggest gig in history, without actually being there!

Just a short walk from home. It was an amazing day. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Stereophonics and Keane were amazing. People were joining in with most of the songs and there was a big cheer when Robbie came on stage and alot of laughter when Ricky Gervais did his little dance. There should be more events held at Meyrick Park in the future. Ideal place for a huge concert with a possibility of a crowd over 20,000

Even though the weather wasn't good it was a great show and with lots of my favourite bands, what moved me the most was seeing the girl that was helped by live aid and how she used to be to how she is now wouldn't be wonderfull if all of africa could be like that or all around the world poverty is a horrible situation that makes a single person feel hopeless but when you can feel you can join something and make a difference such as live8 its great well done Bob

It felt good to be part of it with the big screen. It was the people who made the atmosphere so great. It almost felt like the real thing! Me and my two daughter (3 and 6) had a really good time. Thanks BBC.

Fantastic Day, Fantastic Atmosphere, Fantastic Music! Lets hope the 8 important men were listening hard! I was quite upset that they turned the Screen off before the end as were all the people around me. My best bit of day was definately Pink Floyd - Amazing!

live 8 was amazing, i think it should happen more often. Everyone came together and had an amazing time and realized whats going on in in africa. I hope live8 happens again very soon! Leah..Avonbourne x
