  • 0 min

The kids are impressed with Rome, even if Donna thinks it's Epcot.

  • 1 min

Here's a familiar face: "Hey, it's King Stupid!" laughs Samuel, an aficionado of the CBBC series. Adam is amused that King Stupid thinks Donna is Welsh. Amy's more concerned with a peculiarly dressed lady: "She looks weird. Why does she keep looking?"

  • 2 min

"There are clowns following them!" observes Samuel. "That isn't clown make-up," asserts Adam, "maybe it's to show she's having plastic surgery." "In AD 79?" says Dad. "What are they teaching kids in history these days?" Well, Harry's learned this: "It's Mount Vesuvius! It exploded and destroyed Pompeii!" "A volcano, woo-hoo!" whoops Samuel.

  • 3 min

The title appears. "Why can't you trust people from Pompeii?" asks Dad. The boys roll their eyes, and reply: "Because their 'I's are too close together!"

  • 4 min

"Lovely jubbly!" and "Modern art" both get a big laugh. "Ants in honey - yuk," says Adam. Samuel and Harry look as though they'd consider it.

  • 5 min

"Brace yourselves!" There's much excitement during the earthquake. "No wonder Quintus is suffering with that hangover," says Samuel. "She has the gift," explains Evelina's mum. "The gift of drawing on the backs of her hands," says Adam.

  • 7 min

"What is it?" asks Amy as Evelina calls into the hypocaust vent. "A stone man?" suggest Harry. Samuel helpfully impersonates the creature, growling "I'm a volcano monster!"

  • 9 min

"I might have something to say about that, spaceman!" yells Donna, and the boys laugh. Harry's fascinated by the abbess. "She's got green skin! No, blue skin!" The kids decide it's great fun to communicate with each other with their hands in front of their faces. They quickly realise this means they can't see the screen any more. Samuel and Adam sing along with the choir on the incidental music instead.

  • 10 min

Mr and Mrs Spartacus make the older kids laugh. "Who?" asks Amy quizzically? "Use your psychic paper!" urges Samuel, and cheers when the Doctor does!

  • 11 min

"They don't know 'Volcano'?" queries Amy, surprised.

  • 12 min

"There's lovely," says Caecillius. The kids don't understand why their parents are laughing. "Who's he?" asks Harry as Lucius stalks in, all angry and florid. "He looks drunk," says Adam.

  • 13 min

A stone circuit! "That's not right" asserts Harry.

  • 14 min

Evelina knows the Doctor and Donna's real names. But Lucius also knows about Gallifrey! The kids are open-mouthed with amazement. "She is returning," Lucius tells the Doctor. "Who is?" whispers Amy, trying to keep up. "There is something on your back," he says to Donna. "Oooohh!" say Adam and Samuel. "I can't see anything," says a puzzled Harry. Mum is puzzled, too: "If they know all that, why don't they know about the eruption?"

  • 16 min

Evelina has a stone arm! Adam stares in silent amazement. "She should get some cream for that eczema." suggests Dad. "Ex-zeema," Samuel corrects him.

  • 17 min

"They're breathing in Vesuvius? That can't be good," mutters Harry.

  • 18 min

The Doctor impresses Harry with a magic trick.

  • 19 min

Samuel ponders a throwaway comment: "Ooh. Who is the Doctor's dad?" Adam's amused when Quintus follows the Doctor through the window: "Ha! Typical teenager." "Not in our house, I hope," admonishes Mum. Amy's more interested in Donna's new dress.

  • 21 min

"TK Maxximus" gets a big laugh. But a moment later, Donna's prophesy makes the family solemn. And now the weird sisters want to sacrifice the 'false prophet'! Adam sums up everyone's feelings: "Uh-oh."

  • 22 min

Lucius is rendered armless! Amy's startled! "Eurrgh!" says Harry.

  • 24 min

The Doctor and Quintus flee through the streets, but the boys are still discussing what those stone circuits reminded them of. "Here comes the monster!" yells Harry excitedly. And sure enough, a creature appears, zapping a slave who mistakes it for a deity! "Romans have a funny idea about gods," decides Adam.

  • 25 min

Water attack! Harry makes a mental note of the creature's weakness.

  • 26 min

Donna's bold reaction to her predicament at knifepoint impresses the kids.

  • 27 min

The Doctor jokes about the Sybil: "I said it would never last, she said 'I know', I said 'you would'." Adam groans: "That's as bad as one of yours, dad." Dad is laughing, obviously.

  • 29 min

The boys love the Doctor's water pistol. "I've got one of those!" laughs Samuel.

  • 30 min

"I bloody love you," says Donna. "She said that word to the Doctor," says Samuel, "Love!" Amy grins.

  • 31 min

The High Priestess croaks her warning. "She's got a sore throat!" laughs Adam.

  • 33 min

A Pyrovile looms out of the mountainside. "Crikey!" says Samuel. "That's a full-grown one!" "Mmm. Big," agrees Harry.

  • 34 min

The Doctor is faced by the huge Pyrovile. "He needs a bigger water pistol," thinks Samuel.

  • 34 min

"Don't get yourself in a lava," says the Doctor. Harry and Amy laugh. "That's another of yours, Dad," groans Adam.

  • 36 min

Could our heroes be any more trapped? The kids are very tense. "Lucky that fire's no good on rocks," says Samuel. But the Doctor and Donna are prepared to sacrifice themselves. "It's only the second episode and they're going to die!" gasps Samuel.

  • 37 min

A terrible choice. Will the lever be pushed? Harry's on tenterhooks.

  • 38 min

All the Pyrovillian victims are wailing. The older boys join in: "Nooooooooo!" The volcano explodes. "Wow!" gasps Samuel admiringly.

  • 39 min

The Doctor and Donna survive in the escape pod. But now there's a huge cloud of ash barrelling down towards them! "Wowwww!" says Samuel again.

  • 40 min

Donna tries to prevent people fleeing to the beach and their deaths. The kids have their hands to their faces. Now it's raining ash in Pompeii: "Like snow," thinks Samuel, "but hot."

  • 41 min

The Pompeian family cower in the devastation as the Doctor and Donna leave in the TARDIS. The viewing family are very solemn. "He won't really leave them, will he?" asks a worried Amy.

  • 42 min

"I can't go back. I can't," says the Doctor. "Why not?" demands Samuel. Donna pleads. Mum and Dad look forlorn.

  • 43 min

"Come with me." Relief all round as the Doctor returns to offer Caecillius a hand.

  • 44 min

Pompeii perishes. The Pompeian family watch in anguish: "All those people." The family watching the family share their horror.

  • 45 min

The choral incidental music swells, Adam and Samuel hum along.

  • 47 min

In Rome now, and Quintus is a doctor! Adam and Samuel are delighted. They're even more amused by his new household gods. "You're right about the Romans having odd ideas," says Dad.

  • 48 min

The Next Time preview provokes an outbreak of further cheering: "Ooooood!"
