Wooden Heart

Wooden Heart

Review: Audio adventure or wooden story? One school lets us know!

We asked the pupils of Lyndhurst Junior School in Portsmouth for their views on Doctor Who audio CD Wooden Heart by Martin Day. Here's what Rachel, Alice, Yasmin, Rebecca, George and Bethany had to say:

What is the story about?

A mysterious ship is located by the Doctor and Martha drifting and lifeless. They decide to investigate. On board the ship they find a strange doorway that a lead to a whole new world but it is not all that it seems. The Doctor and Martha encounter a village that has appeared and many mysteries unfold.

What were the characters like?

Rachel and Alice: The Doctor and Martha where humorous in parts. The other characters where also entertaining.
Bethany: The Doctor is very adventurous and Martha is nervous because she is trying to impress the Doctor because she feels she is second best to Rose.
Rebecca and Yasmin: The Doctor shows a gentle side that is not usually seen in the television series.

What did you particularly enjoy/like about Wooden Heart?

George: I enjoyed the fact that the TARDIS went missing, marooning our heroes once again, and sending the Doctor and Martha on a quest to find it.
Rachel: I enjoyed the part where the story built up to major problems.
Alice: I like the parts where the questions are answered.
Rebecca: I like the fact the story was full of mystery, it questioned our existence in a very clever way.

Is there anything about the story that you didn't like?

Rachel and Rebecca: We think the story seemed long at times which made the plot a little slow.
Alice and Yasmin: We think the story was very long and had lots of questions, some we did not understand and even when answered where still confusing.
Bethany: This book/ CD audio is also very similar to other books because in other books people go missing so I think they should come up with another dilemma.

What did you think of the story as a whole?

We think Adjoa Andoh reads it well with no mistakes. Her accents make you feel that you where there alongside the Doctor. Overall the story was very convincing even though we did not see it. It concluded well and left on an overall high.

Marks out of 10?

The group gave Wooden Heart 10/10.

Special thanks to Year six teacher Peter Head for his assistance.
