The Art of Destruction

The Art of DestructionReview: It's set in a volcano - but is this book hot?

Colin, Connor, Kyle and Caitlin of Tarves Primary School in Aberdeenshire give us their thoughts on Stephen Cole's new Tenth Doctor novel.

What's the book about?: The Doctor and Rose find alien exhaust fumes in the Earth's atmosphere and come to investigate. They discover an alien mucus that will turn you into gold when touched. Something is definitely up.

What's the setting?: The story is set in a volcano in a terrorised area of Africa.

Was it exciting?: Yes, each chapter was more exciting and dramatic than the one before. It kept us hooked all the way through.

Was it scary?: Yes in parts. Caitlin - I nearly had nightmares about turning into gold! Connor -The description of Faltato was really frightening. Kyle - It was scary when they were trapped in the room with the golden vulture. Colin - The golems were pretty fierce too.

What were the characters like?: The Doctor was pretty funny and sarcastic and Rose could be funny sometimes too. Basel was very protective over Solomon. Adiel was very mysterious and Fynn could be really bossy.

Who was your favourite character?: Unanimous decision - the Doctor. Colin likes him because he seems to know all the answers and saves the day. Connor, Kyle and Caitlin thought he was very funny and always makes jokes of serious situations.

Did the Doctor and Rose work well will the other characters?:: Yes - they always connect and know what the other one will do. They've got a great friendship.

What were the group's favourite parts?: Colin - I liked it when the Doctor and Basel had the gun pointed at them and the Doctor said "Thanks for that" and took the gun away. Connor - I thought it was good when the Wurms came down in their spaceship and fought with the golems. Caitlin and Kyle - I liked when Faltato came and Rose and Basel argued with him.

What were the group's least favourite parts?: Caitlin, Colin and Kyle thought that Kanjuchi turning to gold was a bit too near the start of the book. Connor thought that Adiel was being very mysterious, she was too dark.

Is the story suitable for your age group?: There were quite a few difficult words in there but the story was really good. We would say it's for ages 9 and up.

Would you recommend this book?: Yes. We would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good, thrilling story.

What rating would you give this book out of 10?:

Colin - 9/10
Connor - 8.5/10
Kyle - 10/10
Caitlin - 10/10

Thanks to all the kids and their teacher Lorraine Walker

Patrice Breanne Alexander, age 12
Hm. This one looks pretty good actually. I'll have to get it when it comes out in America. I'll be looking foward to it when it does. I'll rate it when I get it.

George Phillips
I think that this book is pure genious and also mentions other characters in the DW universe

Kacey
I think the book was awsome! It had so many horrifying and wonderful bits. It was so sad when the doctor thought it was too late for rose when she turned to gold, but his sarcasm inspires me. And the wurms..well they were Hilarious- collosus worms!

Joshua Courtney
I am reading the book- it's great! half way through at the moment. The book is FANTASTIC!

Bad Wolf

I have read this book and have found it very interesting for my age-group.I would recomend it for 10-12 year olds as there are some words that younger children would not understand. I think that Colin , Connor , Kyle and Caitlin judged the book very fairly.

Stacey
I have to say that the ratings that the kids have given all the books are just and I would recommend all twelve books to any Doctor Who fan and any non-Doctor Who fan. They are some of the best books I've read in a very long time, I'm only disappointed by one thing that they were not turned into episodes. 10/10 to all the authors and books alike. I have to say that I don't have a favorite because I love them all. When’s the next one coming out? :)

Arabella
Hi, I'm reading the book right now and I can't put it down!!! It's brillient and I can't wait to see what happends next. I agree that the bit with the volture was very sacry. The mst scariest part for me is when the dotor went unconsious and go hit in the chest. I thought he was showing off a bit when he undid his buttens (from his shirt) in front of Rose. Th efunniest bit for me was when Basel was flirting with Rose. I burst out laughing in class - opps! (That was soo imbarasing!!!

Daniel
good story- but the plot gets a bit too complicated in parts
