I am a Dalek

I am a Dalek

New book released for Quick Reads campaign.

A new Doctor Who book has just been released as part of the nationwide Quick Reads Initiative. I am a Dalek, by Gareth Roberts, is a fast-paced 10th Doctor/Rose adventure that reveals what happens when an archaeological dig on present day Earth discovers a dormant Dalek...

The Quick Reads series of books have been specially designed to appeal to people who either don't have much time to devote to reading or who have perhaps never been bitten by the reading bug.

Other authors who have contributed to the Quick Reads series include Joanna Trollope, Minnette Walters, Andy McNab, Richard Branson, Ruth Rendell and John Bird.

The BBC's RaW campaign has a special section dedicated to the new Quick Reads books. If you'd like to listen to I am a Dalek's author Gareth Roberts reading the first chapter of his book, click the link below and then click the 'launch the RaW reader' link.

I am a Dalek is now available in all good bookshops, priced at just £2.99.

We gave some copies of I am a Dalek to a Reading Group in Stockwell, South London. Here are a selection of their comments (warning - spoilers below!):

How would you describe the book?

  • The book was interesting, and I liked the idea that it was a quick read.
  • Short and to the point; fast-paced; sentimental.

Tell us about the characters.

  • I found the characters easy to relate to, probably because we watch Doctor Who on a Saturday.
  • The characters were great, especially Frank (David Jason with a beard springs to mind)
  • I enjoyed the characters and the name Kate Yates (poor girl) but I liked the way she overcame the Dalek factor and defeated the Dalek.

What were the bits that held your attention?

  • The archaeological dig bits.
  • I liked the bit when they met 10 years earlier.
  • Loved the bit when Kate threw a wobbler in the truck!

Who would you recommend this book to?

  • Anyone who has missed an episode of Doctor Who.
  • Youngsters and new readers.
  • Under-confident readers.

Any other comments?

  • The blurb on the back is wrong - she did not get killed by a bus!

Send us your comment now. We'll publish the best on this page.

Gareth Roberts churns up another fast paced extravaganza to follow on from his slick 9th Doctor book "Only Human". Great stuff!

This book was a very enjoyable read. I read it to my younger sister and she loved it just as much as I did.

Laura
I really enjoyed the book, I've read it 4 times. It's really more like an episode than a book, depending on how you read it. 10/10

I love this book and the other books and i hope my school can do the review for one of the new novels. This book would be great for a tv series. I love David Tennant.

fred
The book was ok, but not the best who adventure by a long shot, but there are too many random daleks popping up on earth now. Want to read a good who book, try the 8th Doctor series.

Gareth Roberts was one of the best writers in the earlier book ranges, and he doesn't disappoint here. He produces a good little story with some well drawn characters and the best bit of dalek destruction since episode four of the dalek invasion of earth! Some of the themes are a little over familiar, but that's the only problem with an excellent little book that would work very well as a tv episode This is the first ever book iv read from cover to cover and thats an achevment for me as i have dislexia and reading is a big problem for me and thank you for this and i hope thay will do more doctor who books like this i thoraly enjoyed reading it

Fantastic book. Gareth Roberts is a great writer, but I am Doctor Who mad so I would love it anyway. Ity should be made into an episode.

I have all the 10th Doctor doctor who books and this is amazing. It's short yet thrilling and I didn't want it to end! It really should be turned into an episode! 10 out of 10!

Mark Lomas
Good characterisation, wished for a much more 'Dalek' based story, but above all, one of the best Tenth Doctor books.

jamie
it was a excellant book, they should make for it tv.

Guy Lambert
A cracking little read that kept me turning the page. And a welcome antidote to a boring bus journey to work!

JJ
Brilliant stuff. Loved the meeting with Frank 10 years earlier, and when the Dalek was revealed! Garteh Roberts is an astonishingly good writer and I would like to see him write a full episode.
