Region 1 DVDs in February

Canadian release of new series box set.

The new series of Doctor Who will appear on Region 1 DVD on February 14 2006. This is obviously a Canadian release, rather than an American one, but is enormously good news.

It will be a five disc box set, with the same extras as the UK (but with no audio description tracks or subtitles for the commentaries). And, we are told, it will be "available in fine stores nationwide".

Send us your comment now. We'll publish the best on this page.

Joe-Illinois USA
Thank you so much for bringing back a great show & releasing the new season on DVD. Finally-I can add to my vidio tape collection of all 26 earlier seasons-Now if I can only upgrade all of those with box set DVD's :)

Leanne- Canada
Fantastic!! I adore Doctor Who since I was very young I have watched it. Started to collect them on VHS now I am so glad they are realsed on DVD I am loving the new series. Series 1 was amazing. Here's to series 2- Tennant rules!! He is the Time Lord.

Vincent Truman
Good. Now I won't have to watch the regeneration sequence over and over any more in order to enjoy the new series.

Onethumb - Texas
Thanks to BBC for bringing back The Doctor. It's been far too long and far too many reruns since last we met! Thanks too for the quick release of Region 1 DVDs. In spite of it appearing to be for Canada, it really is for all of us over here (US too).

Ian
I have been Waiting for the Region 1 release since July, when they announced Region 2 release and had lost hope! But I'm all thrilled now! Thank you BBC/CBC!

Patrick from the Other London
Looking forward to the surround sound and the special features.

Wm
We had friends over last night to watch the first three episodes of the box set. Ordering from amazon.co.uk was very easy, and many region 1 DVD players can be modified to be region free (see videohelp.com). Oh, and the new Dolby Surround soundtrack ROCKS! Some people who came over last night hadn't even heard of Doctor Who before, and they loved it.

Christine--Ottawa
thank you, thank you thank you,.... I've been waiting for this since "Dalek" aired on CBC. Even tho I've loved Dr. Who since I was a little girl when my mum let me watch Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker on TVO before bed back in the 70s, Christopher Eccleston is by far my favourite Dr. I have to admit I cried like a baby when he "died." However, I have to complain about the Feb. release, because now I'm going to be horribly tempted to "forget" my sister's birthday.

Ian
Fantastic! I've picked up just about every region 1 release of the classic series and was getting worried the new series would never get a release here in Canada. Thank you BBC for recognizing the HUGE Doctor Who fanbase here in Canada.

Nancy Rader
Thank you. You have made my day!!! I have been a Dr. Who fan for 30 years and now my 18 year old son is, too. I own many DVDs and now I know what I would like for Valentine's Day. Who needs jewelry when you could have a box set of the new Dr. Who. I went to Maine this past August and I didn't think about CBC showing Dr. Who. I was watching TV and an add come on. I was so excited, and I do not get excited about TV shows. I am just sorry that CBC doesn't broadcast in Virginia. If I can not get the box set in the store or internet, then I will be driving over the border to get my prize.

Mike - Massachusetts
Looking foreward immensely to finally being able to see the new series. Buying it from a Canadian site and paying the bit more in shipping is a small price to pay! THANK YOU!

Andy - Minnesota
I am a nerd. My first trip out to the UK, I made my wife stay in on Saturday night so I can watch the new Dr Who. Loved it. Now I want more. And now I can get it. THANKS!!!!

Doug-Ontario,Canada
Thank you so much for releasing this in Canada.I'll be getting it for sure.

Valerie - BC
Thank you from another Canadian fan! I love the new series and can't wait for the DVD!

Sean
Thank you BBC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scott Edgington
BBC-folk, please don't let us loyal Doctor Who fans in the US what too much longer for an official DVD release. FYI, I came back from a recent trip to England with several packs of Jelly Babies in hand, all because of Doctor Who.

Ken-Boston, MA USA
I'm a Big fan of Dr Who, I can't wait to buy my first copy of the new series.

Alex
I am of the belief that we're only a year or so away from seeing full TV series produced exclusively for DVD release (Paramount just announced a direct-to-DVD production division). This is a chance for the new Who to test this new marketing format with an American DVD-only release. To heck with waiting for Skiffy to pick it up - just put a half-decent price tag on it and sell in the US. It'll do well.

Libby the Yankee
I will get one of these even if I have to walk to Canada barefoot on a carpet of dead bees. Long live Doctor Who!!!

Tom - London (Other London in Ontario Canada)
First, thank you BBC for producing DrWho. Second, thank you CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) for being the only network in North America to show DrWho. Its refreshing to know CBC doesn't always follow suit with those silly US networks. Lastly, BBC please produce an extra batch of DVD's for our American friends. I'm sure we'll see a few crossing the border to buy a copy. Looking forward to next season of DrWho.

Buckaroo Banzai
WOOHOO!!!I'm so excited now. This has been the best day ever!!!First an awesome interview, now this news. What could be better??

Andrew - Minneapolis
Hopefully this set will be released in a standard box, and not the gimmicky unfolding-TARDIS the UK is getting. Probably fall apart within a year. Slimline cases in a box is quite enough, thanks.

Justin-Ohio-USA
I have been a Doctor Who fan for 20 years and I was very delighted with the way the new series turned out. I am very glad that there will be a region 1 release! Sometimes I feel like the BBC doesn't think we, the American people, are worthy of seeing the new show since they don't seem very willing to share it with us. I hope someday they'll change thier minds and we don't have to wait for a year after the series has been out to see it.

Nathan
come on!!!! I buy the dvds for the actor commentary!!!! I'm just going to buy the UK box set and play it on my universal dvd player HOST ADDS: The commentaries are on the box set.

Tom Smith
This news is fantastic! i cant wait for it to come out, cos im gettin it soon as.

Simon - Toronto
Attention America: Fresh water, softwood lumber and Doctor Who DVD's for sale at your friendly neighbourhood store to the north.

Daniel Hughes
Can't wait for the first series to come in the dvd box set next month as I absolutely loved it. Let's hope the second series and the christmas special is just as good.

Will
Its good to see the Canadians aren't missing out on anything. This is splendid news

Tom McGrath
Just because our networks are too dumb to pick up this fabulous show doesn't mean we won't buy the region 1 DVDs if you have them to sell. Please make sure you make enough for us poor deprived Yanks.

DalekClock(Nicky Armstrong)
I'm glad the series is going west on DVD and that both Canadians AND Americans(they can but it off a Canadian website) will be able to see just how cool Doctor WHO is.

Thomas - Pennsylvania
I think the BBC should buy back BBC America from the Discovery Network people and start airing REAL British programming again like Doctor Who and Eastenders, instead of all the home improvement shows we are forced to watch

Rob B. - Michigan
Being a lifelong fan of Doctor Who (well, since 1982. I'm 37) I enjoyed the new series as much as I did the origional. I can't wait to take my next trip to my excellent neighbors across the lake and buy a copy to add to my Who memorabilia. Thanks to the BBC for reinventing the series and making SciFi fun again. Bless you all.

Graeme Smith
This is great news for us Canadian Whovians! Hooray!

MIchael Miller
I too bought a multi-region DVD player JUST to watch the new Doctor. But the region 1 DVD's will be awesome for friends and family who want to see the new show (and they ARE out there waiting impatiently in the USA).

Eric Harper, Los Angeles
I was just online looking for a regionless DVD player (with which to view the new series) when I came across this bit of news. The only question is, will I be able to wait until February...

Jen- Florida
I used to live in London and got hooked. Please have it available in the US soon!

Jean Guerin-Montreal, Canada
Let's hope it's a release of the full special edition with extras and not the bare bones edition. In any case it's a nice valentine's gift for all of us canadian fans.

Prof Sai
Why would a DVD not sell just because it never aired in the US? I would think that would make it sell more, because everyone hasn't seen it yet. Stores here give the original series a healthy amount of shelf space. The BBC should release it and buy a few ads on US TV. That would give them the revenue they need without having to listen to a bunch of complaining suits. Or just put it on iTunes video.

Creole Nicole
Lovely! The perfect valentine for Dr. Who fans in North America.

Cecil McDonald
As a citizen of the United States of America, I would be more than happy to offer the British Government the 13 colonies our ancestors took from them in exchange for an increase in Doctor Who merchandise for the states.

John
The best news in months!!! I was just inches from getting a region free player so I could get my own copy of the show here in the States. And thank goodness for Amazon.ca!! I love, love, LOVE this show! I am so happy now that there's a tear in my eye! "Remember me to Gallifrey!"

Allan Spears
Fantastic news! A perfect gift for Valentine's Day I think. I'm so glad that us folks in Canada are going to be getting the DVDs despite the fact that the behemoth to the south (and its consumer buying power) isn't on board. I was so afraid that because there's no US broadcaster that the BBC would decide there isn't a big enough market for a North American region 1 DVD.

Patrick Power
I hope the BBC is still trying to sell Doctor Who to a U.S. outlet as well, but am very happy to hear of a Region One DVD release. I don't quite understand why it isn't a full North American release though. What does the BBC have against the U.S. fans?

Jason
I think it’s great news that they’re releasing the new Doctor Who in Region 1 DVD. However its sad that it won’t be sold in America as until its aired first on a US broadcaster. The really sad part is I doubt they’ll ever find one really interested enough in the show. Personally I believe the show might due better in America if maybe the entire first season was released in parts at an affordable price (as it was in the UK) as well the entire season in a box set of the season which would be loaded with the extra features. Doing this combined with a large media ad campaign consisting of magazine and television ads surely would spark some interest in Americans who aren’t familiar with Doctor Who. I suggest this because there are a number of shows airing on US broadcasters that I don’t watch because its more fun watching entire seasons of shows on DVD without having to endure shows being preempted or going into reruns in the middle of the season. Plus there’s the extra added bonus not having to watch through commercials.

Jan
That is the best Valentines gift ever!! Move over chocolates and roses we have Doctor Who instead!! xooxoxoxox

J Garth Wilcox
I am now a very happy Canadian!

Bwana Bob
The best news of the year - oh wait - a spin-off as well? I must be dreaming!

Randy - Wisconsin - USA
ATTENTION CANADA! SURRENDER THE DISCS NOW! Do not make us come up there and start some kind of illegal "Doctor Who" smuggling ring - taking them through customs in lead lined suitcases with hidden compartments - hiding them under the shirt of some fanboy who hasn't had a bath since elementary school - WE WANT THE DISCS! ;)

Heath Castor
A Region 1 release is definitely good news. For Americans though, the fact is that these will be a bit more expensive and harder to get ahold of. Most Canadain Only releases are. I certainly hope this means we'll soon be seeing a US release of the complete series soon thereafter. Series box sets are the best way to go and I hope the BBC will see this and release it that way. This is good news though. Now it won't be quite as expensive to get them.

Sam Leighton
Well I'm British but its great to see so many Canadians and Americans enjoying what I regared as the cream of British TV. Hope you loved the new series as much as me and happy viewing when it finally reaches you!!!

Jon - California
If the BBC haven't given up marketing the show to the US broadcast market, it must be because they're waiting until 27 episodes (season 1, 2 + Christmas special) are lined up to make a pretty package....

Lindsey Safford
OMG!!! This is fantastic news. I can't wait to buy them. (does a happy dance)

Neal Hallford
At the very least, I don't see why the Beeb can't negotiate a deal with BBC America. This would be much more welcome on my tube than "Footballers Wives".

Adam Drake
Being an American, but having seen the series on CBC (my wife's family lives close enough to Canada for their cable company to carry the CBC) I am thrilled to be able to see it they way it was meant to be seen! I, too, was going to buy a region free DVD player and buy the UK release, but now I won't have to! Thank you, BBC! No just get a US broadcaster to pick this wonderful show up! I know the show will pick up millions of new American fans!

Erik
This is excellent news! Certainly, it's disappointing that no network in the USA has picked up the series yet, but Canadian fans are very pleased that we'll see the new series on DVD sooner than we anticipated!

Rob Harvey
FANTASTIC, absolutley FANTASTIC! this is gr8 news as my m8 in the US is iching to watch the series and he was about to buy a multy region dvd player LOL thanks for the news guys! best of luck getting more people into doctor who worldwide :-p

Wayne Trznadel
I too was going to buy a Region Free DVD player to get these...just hoping the BBC can push the series so se can see it properly in the USA.

Rupert
I've enjoyed watching the new series here in the US on my multi-regional DVD player. As good as it is, however, it limits its appeal in the US market because of its 'family' target audience - it does often have a childish feel to it. Upgrading to the Star Trek/Babylon 5/Battlestar Galactica level of maturity would make it a lot more viable. And why do we now have an Earth-bound Dr Who? He seems to have forgotten about the 'ardis' in Tardis!

Howard Decker
If I miss out on these DVDs because they're all going south of the border to our American friends, I will not be amused. For that matter, if everyone in Canada who wants them gets them, and then BBC America does an American release with extra bonus content, I will not be amused. But for now... I am happy.

Paul
I think I am going to have a heart attack. Now those in the States can finally get to watch the new series. Without the problems in picture quality you get with PAL

Maureen - Winnipeg, Canada
YAY! It's true...good things DO come to those who wait. I've been trying to decide whether to risk buying the Region 2 set. I'm 86% certain my dvd player will play them. But now I'll wait for February and the Region 1 set. You've brought sunshine to a very cold and wet day. Thank you.

Keith Smith
Oh, thank God this is finally happening. Hopefully it'll be a no-holds-barred release. I'll be waiting...

Bill -- Minneapolis
I'll add my THANK YOUs as well. I had a sister in northern MN tape the new series from the Canadian Broadcasting System. I can't wait to have the full DVD (she missed several parts of several episodes). I also agree that someone in the US should broadcast the new series. Uh... like BBC America? They seem to have time for Eastenders and Benny Hill for 5 hours a day, but can't fit DOCTOR WHO in for an hour a week.

J.J. - Saskatchewan - Canada
Fantastic. It's great to be able to support the programs you beleive in. It's kind of like voting with your money. Besides which, my videotapes are already starting to degrade from much use. This is the best news I've heard all week!

Bruce
Not sure exactly why a Region 1 DVD is "obviously" a Canadian release, but I'll pick one up none the less.

Alexandros
Great news the DVD set looks wonderful... Don't give up on getting broadcasts in the USA. You will crack America

Jeff Murray
Fantastic news! Forget the TV sales, just let us have the thing!

Sean Bailly
Yeah! I've been waiting for this news for a long time! Thank you BBC!!

Josiah Rowe
It's good news for Canadians, and US folks who are already Doctor Who fans, but I hope this doesn't mean that BBC Worldwide has given up on selling "Doctor Who" to a US broadcaster. Without a broadcast in the US, the only Americans who'll get this are geeks like me who are already big-time Doctor Who fans. (Heck, I was a big enough fan to get a region-free DVD player so I could play the Region 2 DVDs!) It shouldn't just be hard-core fans in the US who get to see Doctor Who — everyone should have a chance! (And we'd probably pick up some new fans along the way, too...)

Nathan Redmond
I anxiously await the new series over here in Victoria. After a little more experience with the Classic Series, of course.

Steve
Thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!

Mark Hadlund
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! now I won't need to buy a multiregion DVD player to see the new Doctor Who in America. THANK YOU!

jamie hayward
i love doctorwho and i can't wait untill the new series comes out

Jon - California
Note to our good neighbors to the North: please order enough dics that we can get a few, too! Please....
