Fear Forecast: Dalek

Fear Factor 4: Chilling, say our panel of children.

bbc.co.uk's Fear Forecasters count the cushion-clutching in episode six, Dalek:

SCARY MINUTES AND MAGIC MOMENTS:

Amy: 'That's a nice Dalek. He's Rose's best friend.'

(1) Harry - 'It must be a museum of *all* of Dr Who's enemies!' Samuel engrossed by the Cyberman head, 'That's sad.'

(2) Samuel amazed when Rose says to the Doctor 'You're Exhibit A.'

(2) Titles crash in. Amy is puzzled - 'Is it finished now?'

(3) Dalek torture. Quite unsettling. Amy behind Mum 'I don't like this bit'

(4) Musical Instrument. Samuel laughs. Amy smiles. 'I like this bit.' All realise that Mr Van Stratten is a nasty man when he throws the alien flute away. They know that nice people don't treat their toys like that!

(8) Harry, opened mouthed - 'It's a Dalek!' Samuel's eyes are stood out on stalks, too. 'That's scary,' says Adam. Amy is unperturbed.

(9) The Dalek can't kill the Doctor. Samuel is amazed, Adam is amused. Harry: 'That's going to be easy to defeat!' Amy is more cautious and frowns at the 'Metaltron'.

(10) The Doctor explains, 'I had no choice'. Samuel's hand goes to his head.

(11) A cushion clutching moment for all the kids as the Doctor turns nasty. Adam covers his mouth in shock.

(12) A minute later Adam's laughing as his namesake tells Rose that the universe is teeming with alien life.

(13) Samuel amused when once again Rose says that she and the Doctor are 'just good friends'.

(14) Mum laughs at the description of the Dalek as like 'a great big pepperpot'. The boys look blankly at her.

(15) The Doctor's being tortured. Samuel winces. Amy points curiously. 'Dr Who is naked Mummy!' Harry is not concerned with the Doctor's anatomy. A mildly frightening scene.

(17 - 19) Edge of seat stuff. Dalek says 'I am in pain.' Samuel decides this is a good time to do a Dalek impression from the sofa, but shuts up suddenly as it escapes!

Adam, Harry and Samuel agog at the sucker attack. 'I never knew it could do *that*!'

(22) Adam groans in dismay as the Dalek kills the troops. 'No-one listens to the Doctor when he tells them where the weak spots are!' he complains. Samuel looks very serious as the Dalek chases Rose up the stairs.

Troop massacre. Harry is thoroughly engrossed as the Dalek starts to kick bottom. 'Woah. Woah! WOAH!'

It's all a bit much for Amy - she decides that the best way to watch this action-packed sequence is by doing a handstand on the sofa. She remains like this, on and off, for the next ten minutes.

Harry is amazed when the Dalek starts up the stairs 'I didn't know it could do that either!'

(27) 'They're being electrified!' declares Adam, who is very impressed with the flying Dalek's tactics. 'This is scary,' says Samuel, 'the Dalek's got a boost-up!'

(30) 'You would make a good Dalek!' Harry smiles - 'No he wouldn't!'

The Doctor berates the Dalek over the intercom, and it's not only invective that's flying. 'It's spitty Doctor!' says Adam. 'Look! You can see the dribble!'

(31) 'I like the phone,' says Adam, as Rose talks on her mobile. 'It's really modern.'

(33) Rose is trapped. Amy stops her acrobatics and returns to the safety of her Mum.

'I know what will happen!' Says Harry 'It *won't* exterminate'. He smiles confidently. His face drops as the Dalek fires. Scary!

Adam looks glum. Samuel's face falls, and his bottom lip sticks out. He puts his head in his hands.

(34) Rose is alive. Adam, Harry and Samuel are all smiles of relief. Amy frowns.

(37) The whole family grin as the Dalek takes the lift.

(38) Amy is happy. 'The Dalek is friends with Rose now, isn't he Daddy?

(39) The Dalek is revealed in the shaft of sunlight. Samuel busily draws an illustration on paper.

(40) Dalek innards - Harry moves closer to the telly to get a better view. Amy grimaces.

(42) Mum and dad try not to blub as the Dalek dies. Adam is more pragmatic: 'I've never seen Dalek bumps come off before.' Samuel is still busy with his illustration.

(42) Bye bye Dalek. Harry - 'So that's what the balls do'.

(43) On-screen-Adam goes into the TARDIS after Rose. 'Now she's got two boyfriends,' declares on-sofa-Adam, 'and he's from the future!'

Samuel's impressed too: 'The new assistant looks cool.'

Harry - 'Did he just go into the TARDIS?'

(44) Episode ends, and there's no trailer on the preview tape. 'Awww!' shout the boys.

Not the best episode, but still excellent! But when it looked like Rose was getting killed, what was the Dalek shooting at? It was too confusing. Fear factor 3.

I LOVE DALEKS! This is my favourite episode in the 1st new series yet, simply because it shows you what Daleks would be like if they had emotions and could feel fear. I hope that wasn't the real last Dalek...they've got to come back sometime!
