Tenth Doctor announced

Tenth Doctor announced

David Tennant will play the tenth Doctor Who.

David Tennant will play the next Doctor, it was announced today by Jane Tranter, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning.

Tennant, whose recent credits include BBC Three's Casanova, Blackpool and He Knew He Was Right, will star alongside Billie Piper who returns as Rose Tyler for the upcoming Christmas Special and second series.

"I am delighted, excited and honoured to be the tenth Doctor!" said David. "I grew up loving Doctor Who and it has been a lifelong dream to get my very own TARDIS.

"Russell T Davies is one of the best writers television has ever had, and I'm chuffed to bits to get the opportunity to work with him again. I'm also really looking forward to working with Billie Piper who is so great as Rose.

"Taking over from Chris is a daunting prospect; he has done a fantastic job of reinventing the Doctor for a new generation and is a very tough act to follow."

"Christopher Eccleston's wonderful Doctor has reinvented the role, so that it now appeals to the best actors in the land," noted Executive producer/writer Russell T Davies. "I'm already writing David's first new adventure on board the TARDIS!

"Regeneration is a huge part of the programme's mythology, and I'm delighted that new, young viewers can now have the complete Doctor Who experience, as they witness their hero change his face!"

"Christopher Eccleston has given an exceptional performance as the ninth Doctor," added Executive Producer Julie Gardner. "David Tennant is a great actor who will build on the excellent work already done by Christopher in establishing Doctor Who for a new generation."

Things you might not know about David:

  • His favourite band is The Proclaimers
  • He was born in Paisley, Scotland on April 18th 1971, so this is a bit of an early birthday present for him!
  • He once played a cross-dressing barmaid in an episode of the comedy series Rab C. Nesbitt

netty
good luck david but i still fancy chris as he is the right age for me !!! netty(40) plus i have never fancied a dr who before a whole new reason to watch !!!!!

grace m
i think it is a shame that christopher eccleston is leaving already as i think he portrayed a brilliant doctor, but i am also a fan of david tennant and hope he plays the part just as well, which i'm sure he will! i cannot wait till the christmas special, this programme is so good i couldn't imagine a saturday being complete with out it - can't wait for the next series!!

Claire Watson
Congratulations David on being the new Dr Who. I thought he was fabulous in Casanova, and I'm sure that he'll bring all the ecentricity that we expect aswell as his own take on being The Doctor. Good Choice!

john boy
Chris eccleston to cool to be james bond

Andy
I'm a long time fan. There is magic in each of the Doctors. I will mourn Christopher Eccleston's, but I am ready to embrace David Tennant. I wish I were more familiar with his work, but I was reticent at first to accept either Chris or Billie and they both won me over. I have every faith that the new lineup will succeed as long as the crew continues to rise to the challenge and love Doctor Who as much as I think they do.

Daniel
I have never ever seen an old doctor who series but Eccleston has done a pretty damn good job. I'm a bit weary of Tennant coming in as the new doctor because he just doesn't seem to fit the part right... Guess we'll soon find out!

Spare Head 2
David Tennant will be good as the Doc; I remember him from Takin Over The Asylum; if he just combines his character from that with Cassanova then he'll do a bang up job!

Esa
David Tennant is a fantastic actor - I have followed his career since Takin Over the Asylum in which he was just superb!

Sasha
I think that CE was really good in the last series of Dr Who and I thought the way they switched actors was brilliant. I haven't seen all of Casanova but from what I did see I reckon David T will make a great, v sexy Dr! Best of luck to both.

haz
WOW David's the new Dr.Who! I thought it was amazing enough before! Now we have David Tennant to swoon over! Thank you BBC!

xjadex
i really like the old doctor who cos he was funny but i like the new doctor who because he got nice hair xx

Ben
After watching "the parting of ways" i think David Tennant will be excellent. Good choice guys!

joel
Eccleston was for sure the best ever doctor, i wish he had stayed on for 1 more season, but i guess that could kill his movie career. Anyways i think David Tennant is gonna do alright... big shoes to fill ! ! ! oh yeah Billie Piper is a way better actress than singer!

betty
the new doctor is hot!

Tammy
Fwoargh...David Tennant is soo hot and I look forward to watching him in the New Dr Who series. As for his acting ability, I thought we was really good in Casanova and fantastic in Blackpool and I think he will make a really good if not a little bit quirky, Dr.

peter spearman
Fantastic new series...."where were we.....Ahhh...Barcelona!!"..Chris Eccleston was a great doctor-as good as Tom Baker for his Eccentricity and enthusiasum.Cant balme him for not being typecast and refusing to carry on...I just wish Billie had continued to be the gutsy, ballsy assistant she was....Dave Tennant will be good

rachel
well i like the look of this new doctor i can not wait to see rose's mother and mickeys faces *lol*

ash
david tennant is fantastic at acting, absolutely gorgeous and knee weakenly sexy

sophia mills
christopher eccleston was great but david tennant will bring something new to the doctor, something funny and quirky.I'm looking forward to it.

E. Doc Smitth
Eccleston was fantastic, and yes, the best since Tom Baker. A fabulous wrap-up to 13 stellar episodes. They will be talking about Eccleston's performance for years to come. and my goodness, if they had this kind of animation during the Baker-Davison-Baker-McCoy era, it may never have gone off the air! Good luck to Tennant... However, with the writing this good, he will do just fine. Bring on the Cybermen!

alex dan
am grateful that I can now watch Dr Who again, with that versatile actor David Tennant, because I found Christopher Eccleston completely unwatchable. A laddish dahn the pub type does not belong in any Dr Who image thank you!!

Diane
Just watched the regeneration scene. Sorry to see Chris Eccleston go, he made the Doctor edgy and intruiging, but from the first quirky line to the wide grin I knew David had it nailed. Score one for the Bathgate boy!

Vanessa (18)
I thought Mr Eccleston and Ms Piper were brilliant, and (as a new whovian), I really enjoyed the first series. I do, however, think Mr Tennant will be brilliant as the Doctor - I fell in love with him in Casanova - and I can't wait to see him in action. Can't wait, can't wait. I would've asked for an older Doctor, but Mr Tennant is too good for me to really complain

Jim-Bob Jones
Gah, how can anyone live up to the awesomeness of Chris Eccleson? Oh well, at least Billie Piper is staying....

Mark
If we want to remain faithful to the spirit of Dr Who then the lead actors should be forced to sign up for at least two series. The whole point about the regenerations was what a terrible shock they were each time, they should not be allowed to become a mundane end-of-each-series thing.

Mrs Mac
The new man is a veritable love god..

Sally
i think David tennant will make a great doctor, his performance in Blackpool was fantastic

Paulie Mac
David Tennant can come and visit my Tardis anyday..

Harriet
I loved David in Casanova! He'll make a great doctor who! He's got the right kind of personality for it!

Greg Wotton (Canada)
I've gotta say that I was really worried about a DocWho ressurection but Chris has done a terrific job and is by far the best doctor since Baker. Since I don't know Tennent's work I have to say that I'm again trepidatious about the new season. Sorry friends but we've had some pretty lame Doctors and I'm loathe to let Chris go so quickly. His energy and presence and sheer enthusiasm about showing the galaxy to Rose and in just being alive is a terrific portrayal. At last, a great chapter in Doctor history. So sad that it's going to be so short lived. I can only hope that the casting people who brought us Eccelston were involved in choosing Tennent. Good luck mate, you've got big shoes to fill.

Kate Kierney
I think Chris Eccleston has been the best doctor ever! however I think we should give David Tennant the chance to make the role his own. Good luck Christopher! Hello David!

sam
It's a big shame that Eccleston is going already. I really think he sould have done two series. I hope david tennant'll be good enough and does more than one series.

laura
i hope david all the best in Dr who and it was a great choice i hope that billie will stay on because shes great!!

Emma
I think Christopher Eccleston should't have left as he is the best doctor who and Rose is brilliant too! Emma aged 8

PeggySue
I think it's a real shame that Christopher Eccleston is leaving, he's been the most sexy and dynamic Doctor for years. Being a long time viewer and remebering DW from Patrick Trouton's days, I would have liked to have seen Chris do more episodes. As for Billie Piper! She's been the best assisstant since Victoria. Billie really is playing the part well. I can't stand wimpy DW assisstants. Go girl!!!

AJay
To many people are being far to critical about CE. Personaly, I feel he has done a tremendous job...it would never be easy to pick up the role of the Doctor and make it yours...but CE did it so well, he deserves a medal. He plays the eccentircness of TB, the youthfull playfullness of PD, and the adventuressnous (if that could be used as a word) of SMcC. Not tom= mention he appears to love his gadgets aswell, so a little JP came threw aswell. And considering we have not seen the Dr for 15 years, hes done a most remarkable job.

Dwayne
all true but where is the greatest of all doctors all bow down before Tom Baker. He was and is in most fans eyes the true character of the doctor. i wonder if the bbc will offer him a cameo role or if he will even want to play it. for the sake of the fans i hope they do and i hope he says yes. Imagine if they even have him on as an old doctor. that would be FANTASTIC as chris would say.

Douglas
Being from the States I really have no experience watching David Tennant. I was reasonably happy with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, and therefore I assume that the producers have made a good choice with his replacement. I must agree with everyone here, do not let Billie Piper out of your sight!

james H
Doctor who should not have been brought back it is weak and very childish. Get rid of it quick.

Sarah
I'm sure DT will do a great job, although as a new generation 'Whovian'(!) it'll be hard to let go of Chris' Doctor. And am I the only one who finds CE's doctor pretty damn sexy?

Olly
Eccles cake deserves to go, no offence but he can b a bit irratating, especially the over acting. "FANTASTIC", please please please dont give the next doc such an annoying corny catch phrase. Loadsa love Olly xoxoxox

Daithi McOisdealbaigh, Ireland
First off, well done Mr.Eccleston. I'm delighted to say i have enjoyed your take on 'The Doctor' very much and i am dissapointed you wont be back for the second series, considering your take on the title role has had quiet an impact on the sucess of the new series. As for the casting of David Tennant, well i must be honest, i have yet to see any of his previous work but i do think he looks a little young for the part (Yes, yes i know Peter Davidson was infact two years younger then Tennant when he was offered the part). Ive always felt 'The Doctor' should be played by an older Actor, like Eddie Izzard, Richard O'Brian or Bill Nighy. Also I'd love to see a return to the Edwardian or Victorian Look of 'The Doctor'. Anyway Best of Luck to Chris Eccleston in the Future and David Tennant in the role. I look forward to following the second season.

Pawel
Billie Piper is amazing, I had no idea she would end up fitting the role so perfectly.

Matt L
It is a pity that Chris Eccleston is leaving so early, but i think the BBC got the right person with David Tennant. Plus, whats all this about him being too young to play the part?Peter Davison was two years younger than Tennant and his presence in the part was met with warmth.

chris
you probably wont put this comment on the page because you cant take critisism but in the second series, is the doctor going to come out of the background?? the whole programme is about rose, her irritating fella and her mum nearly every episode, you could kill ecclestons doctor off and not notice!

Alan Jones
Well I must say I ahve enjoyed watching both Chris and Billie, and as was pointed out this will give the new viewers a chance to see how a new Dr appears. One thing though, please oh please do not let Billie go, not only is she very atttractive, but she brings life to the whole series. (Is she married???)

Cris Bates
Reading through these comments it seems that 'Who' fans are a pretty warm hearted bunch. What a great start it will be for Tennant who, if he carry this off, can clearly do anything!

colin
eccleston is one of my fav actors anyway, so im biased, but im sure David will do a awesome job , good luck to him!

catherine
i think its sad that christopher eccleston has left because he and billie piper were both really good. it is really unfortunate and the worst thing that could happen is that billie piper will leave as well

JB
As somebody who knew David from our days together back at Drama School, let me assure any 'concerned' viewers that the real point of interest here is not in him landing the role, but exactly how he'll choose to play the part. David has the breadth, skill and overall talent to excel in just about any role that is thrown at him - well done Dave!... another step in your already highly succesful career!

A Paisley Buddie
As someone who knew David at school, all I will say is that I and many others who knew him from that time think that he is prefect for the role as THE DOCTOR. Well done David and good luck

Hannah
NOOOOOOOOOOO no offence I'm sure that this new person is a great actor but Christopher Eccleston just has the character! He just has this vibe or attitude about him that really brings the doctor of the series to life and that cannot be replaced! I will cry when he leaves!! And he aint exactly good looking but him and Rose have chemistry and omg!!!! He should at least stick around for another series! I'm a new doctor who fan and the reason I'm a fan is because of him! Oh well....

David in Canada
I have yet to see David Tennant act - and I have only seen the first episode of the new series with Christopher in the main role - but I can already tell he's going to be one of my favourite "Doctors". Perhaps David will surprise me as well and become another favourite. Please do your best to keep Billie Piper on for at least another couple of seasons as she is a perfect choice for a companion and for some odd reason reminds me of Ace. I wonder if Eccleston would ever return for a special. Oh, and PLEASE for those of us who have not read the books in the last couple of years, make a point of addressing what happened to Gallifrey in the series. :) Thanks and Best Wishes to David in his new role and Christopher is his new endeavours.

Flepe
I say that Stve Coogan would be the perfect Doctor, or what the hey. They should have asked Rowan Atkinson. I loved that comic relief special!

Sarah Bush
I think that David Tennant is a good choice - his performances in Casanova & Quatermass should get him a BAFTA next year, if not there's no justice in the world! He won't be the 1st scottish doctor (remember Sylvester McCoy?) but will he be the 1st Doctor to wear a kilt?

Hugh
We really need somebody in the style of Colin Baker. He was brilliant.

Bill
Awsome, I just found out that David will be appering in the new Harry Potter movie!!! If you had to ask me who would be the best Doctor, then without a pause I would recommend Chris Barrie from Red Dwarf.

kathy
I love dr.who i think the bbcs made the right choice picking David Tennant

Barry
isn't funny how the BBC don't put comments on here from Doctor Who fans who hate this new series

Bryony
I wish Chris was staying... ah well. I really think Eddie Izzard should've been the new Doctor, he would've been marvellously eccentric.

Chris Elms
I wonder is the BBC actually listened to the fans when choosing Tennant as the new doctor. Because I do not know a single person who think he'll do a good job. Whatever happend to Bill Nighy?

Ray Reeves
Good luck to David, but can we PLEASE revert to a more Edwardian style of atire for the Doctor

Lee
The Doctor really is getting careless in his old age isn't he? what a waste of two lives, I've really enjoyed the new series and although the eighth Doctor only appeared once in a poorly written movie he has to be one of my favorites. It would have been interesting to see if Paul Mcgann could have come back to play the eighth doctor in a sort of prequel series, to make up for lost time, it could've showed what happened fully with the Daleks and the Time Lords in the third great Time War. Good Luck David and Best Wishes to Chris in his future roles.

Sally C
What a shame for Christopher to leave so soon he has been my favourite doctor to date! Good luck to David Tennant hope you manage to keep the ratings up!

Brian
Did they make him sign a 3 year contract? I still think it is ridiculous that they didn't do that the first time.

Josh Milewczyk
i am 12 and i think the doctor needs to be much older looking

Amy
i am sooooooooo chuffed David Tennant is taking over!!! He is such a great actor and quite quirkily fit!!!!

Fox
I think that David Tennant is an excellent actor and will make the show just that little bit better than it was before. It is a shame to be seeing Eccleston leave, but I'm sure that Tennant will satisfy the viewers.

Pierre
All the best David. I have faith in Dr Who!

Kevin
David Tennant will be awesome! One of the best actors on TV right now. If not the best.

Stephen
I wonder if David Tennant will be compared to Patrick Troughtons Doctor, in the fact that if Patrick wasnt a brilliant actor, then regeneration would never have passed off, and the series would have ended. I hope David Tennant plays it well. I just hope they keep the same mimimal style perhaps a different leather jacket?

Jodey
I'm quite upset they're changing the doctor already, but David is a good actor and I will like to see how he is different from Chris. And I'm glad Billie is staying. Rose is great!

Marcus
No chance that Billie could be transmuted into the new Doctor in a quirky time/space accident?....I think "Nurse Who" would be a top-hole show..... if I could design the costume I would guarantee no question marks.....

Dave
It should have been Mark E Smith

Mark
Great actor, I loved Casanova and hopefully he will be as good in Doctor Who. But please get away from the single episode stories, they dont give enough time for you to get into it. Billie Piper... gorgeous, how about a Doctor Who set in Hawaii so she can get into a bikini.....

Gary Stringer
I'm delighted that David Tennant is officially taking over. Let's just hope he wants to stay on for more than just one season, or the Doctor's going to be running out of regenerations!

Andy Edwards
Little disappointed Chris has handed the TARDIS keys over to a new actor. Still, perhaps we will get a modern regeneration scene! Please please please can we have a regeneration scene with Rose not having an idea what is going on. It will give us classic Who fans something to smile about, and explain some things for new viewers who don't quite get the regeneration thing.

Mark Hevingham
I hope the producers don't make him a clone of the 9th Doctor; each previous incarnation has been unique and this should be carried over to the new Doctor. It would be disasterous to ask Mr Tennant to follow the leather jacket "fantastic!" portrayal with anything less than a totally new approach and look. And NO question marks!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff Jolly
David was fantastic in "Casanova" and should make a very good Doctor. The only thing is - you know you're getting old when the new Doctor Who is younger than yourself!!! Wasn't David also in some of the Big Finish Audio plays (Dalek Empire maybe)? Good luck to him anyway - I hope he stays longer than Chris or we'll be out of lives in a few short years!

Marc Peberdy
Why couldn't we have David in the first place? He's easier on the eye (apparantly cheaper) and doesn't resort to silly walks and grinning like a twa.......

Dan Tessier
An excellent choice if I may say so. Tennant is an excellent, quirky and emotive actor. He's a bit more obvious a choice than Eccleston - who nobody was expecting - and I expect that we'll recieve a slightly more traditional Doctor as a result. I'd be very interested to see how he plays it.

Alan Boyd
As long as Billy Piper stays aboard the Tardis, who cares who plays the Doctor? She's the real Star of the show, not the Time Lord.

Steve Ogron
Congratulations David, Stick with it, the Doctor is running out of lives!!!

Vernon Smith
Good Luck to David Tennant and congratulations on landing the role. I know you will do wonders with it.

John Taylor - Tyne & Wear
David is the perfect choice to replace Christopher. He is superb in Casanova. He reminds me of the brilliant Patrick Troughton

Alex Jones
I loved david tennant he is just brilliant. i think that he will be a very worthy docter who. this new series i think just lacks something special but i think that david tennant has it.

Jimmy Mann
I think he will be great actually! its a shame Chris had to leave, he could have opend up loads about he character., but nevertheless new things can be explored with the 10th Doctor!

L Peterson
No offence to David, but surely this is not the time to change the lead actor? Christopher should have thought about the impact of his leaving for the future of the series. This is the BBC remember and the track record from those in charge is not good. We need stability at this early stage not changes.

Phil Christodoulou
I think that if they dress David up like they did in Casanova then he could really look they part of the Doctor. If think it's great to see that the new Doctor is in fact a long time Doctor Who fan which wasn't the case with Christopher Eccleston. I think he will need to change the accent alot, as he does have a very strong Scottish accent. However I still do think that Richard E Grant would've been a better choice, he would bring that level of seriousness which has been really lacking from the new series.

Frances Bowie
Who would believe we would have a Tenth Doctor so soon. In my opinion, David Tennant is one of the best actors in the country. His many varied roles proves that he has scope to take on the role of the Doctor. It's great to see a fellow Scot rise to such an undertaking. Good luck to him!

Philip Hogg
David Tennant did a fantastic job in Casanova, I'm sure his performance as the Doctor will be just as entertaining.

Matt Webb
Welcome aboard the TARDIS David. We in the states still haven't seen the latest series and now"BANG" an even newer Doctor! Just do us a favour will ya? Stick around for a while okay? Not only am I looking forward to your portrail but I'm affraid we might run out of Doctors in four years! Cheers!

Danny J.
I wish I knew more about David's acting abilities, I wasn't allowed to watch Casanova because my Mum said I was to young :)

???????????????
its great having doctor who back on the screens especially when its david tennant he is really funny and i hope he doesnt wear anything like the past doctors have wore

Blue
FANTASTIC, not only the best man for the job but I'm also about to go collect £500 on the 'who's gonna be the next Doctor' pool!!!

Georgina Ledger
Well, I'd like wish David Tennant luck in landing the role of 10th Doctor.

sharon j stevenson
As a family we are really enjoying the new Dr who.Chris is excerllent as the Dr.Good Luck to David and we hope he makes the Dr his own...Please bring back K9.

David McCallum
Congratulations to David Tennant - a fantastic actor who I'm sure will prove to be an amazing Doctor! Incidentally, I'm also a Scottish David, and I share a birthday with Mr Tennant (except he's a year older!)

Tim Dockley
I must say I have been delighted by the new series, and I think David Tennant will make a good Doctor. However I was not impressed with Episode 4 broadcats on Saturday. A Pig and Farting Aliens, it was juvenile and absurd.

spencer
I do believe that david tennant embodies the spirit and character of DR Who . Dr who has always had an air of eccentricity. And with tennants previous costume drama roles .he is already in the pysche of the viewing public. Im a tom bakerite . But i feel david is a far better choice than christopher eccleston. the glibness and vapid vacant attitude of the ninth dr ,Just did not fit . Although there were very good aspects and acting form messrs eccleston. I didnt feel comfortable watching him .And he didnt appear to be at ease in the role. you can imagine tennant at home standing at the tardis console

Jack
Wow, I'm impressed! I think David Tennant would make a great "doctor who" after the huge success of BBC Three's "casanova". I sure am looking forward to the xmas special & series 28!

Mally Badger
An absolute inspired piece of casting! David is a wonderful actor and a gem of a man!

ian groombridge
Watching both Blackpool and Casenova proves what an excellent actor David Tennant is the Doctor was made for his talents may he play the role for years PS no I'm not his agent!

sophie cole
chris eccleston is my favourite dr who and if he really loved his role as the doctor who wouldnt care if he was/is type-casted. Peirce Bronson knew he would but it didnt stop him doing the thing he loved.

Nev
Christopher Eccleston has done a great Job at playing the Doctor so far, its a shame he is leaving the show so soon. I dont think it wouldnt of hurt his acting career to of stayed on for the next series. But he has made his decision. It will be a tough act to follow, but it will Interesting to see how David Tennant will approach playing the Doctor. I havent seen him in Casanova or anything else so I dont really know much about him. But I hope if all goes well he will stay on in the role so there will be a little bit longer between the next Regeneration!

Gary Barton
David Tennant was fantastic in Casanova, let's hope he can bring the same mixture of devilish charm and sincere emotion to the 10th Doctor!

Simon Healy
Brilliant choice. David Tennant was fantastic as Casanova and will hopefully be the Doctor for more than one series!

Malachi O'Connell
This is good news that we are getting a Doctor Who fan to play the lead role. Eccleston was constantly saying in interviews that he was no fan of the classic series-not taking away from the great performances he is putting in for the new series. The new series is for the new generation of people who didnt appreciate the original and so will see regeneration take place

Denis
Good luck David! The Whovians are awaiting you!!

Gary Leach
I am really pleased that a young talented actor is to take over the role. The series has now been established thanks to Christopher Eccleston and Mr Tennant can only add his unique style to the part of the Doctor.

Chrisette
Frankly, I'm very dissapointed to find out that the change of a main role is happening so soon. I know it had to happen one day, but I thought the watchers will have a bit more time to get to know the present Doctor before it moves on to another.

Chris Hunter
To all those who say he’s to young, Peter Davison was I believe younger than Tennant is now when he took up the role. Let’s hope the doctor regains a bit more of his original character. The highly intelligent, mad professor who’s more of a farther/teacher figure to his companion/companions than a grinning rude hand holding idiot that we have at the moment. That’s not a slight on Christopher but the doctor had a serious side and a love for all life and would not in my opinion upon hearing screams grin fold this arms and say brilliant! David Tennant could be good.

Noobie
Tingling with anticipation - if David can deliver a sharp and witty performance as he did in RTDs 'Casanova' then I'll be a convert to Doctor Who.

James, Kent
It's a shame that Chris has given up the role so quickly, but I think David will be fab. He was superb in Casanova!

Rich Taylor
A great choice he seem to be the man of the moment he was good in the teriffic new version of The Quatermas Experiment.

THE MASTER
A big mistake the BBC should have gone for Dennis Waterman!

Gary Pownall
congratulations to him! But isnt he a bit young to be playing a 900 year old time lord?

Tom MacNeill
"Go for it Dave!"

Neil Francis
I am intrigued to see DT as the new Doctor. As someone who is familiar with his roles-without having to scurry around to view them purely because he taking on the role-I feel that he has the capability and range to offer the role enough depth and substance (coupled with whatever characteristics are formed, from dark to comic, from mysterious to eccentric). CE, as the current Doctor, has presented many new aspects and ideas for development and, as we now know, only intended to help the show's initial reinvention, as opposed to keeping the role for years. Tennant needs to appeal broadly, avoid being too comic, but also not too serious. As for the inevitable debate about his age from many, please recall Davidson was younger. Just because the show is now in it's forties the actor playing the lead role doesn't have to be, hmmm?! Best of luck DT.

Dave
It's about time we get a younger and hopefully more energetic Doctor. It is the new mellenium and thus far the new series lives up to and beyond expectations keep up the good hard work

Liam Forristal
Delighted that the excellent Mr Tennent has been selected. Of course we all would like to have seen Christopher carry on from the shows evidence so far , he is a pure delight. After watching Casanova and its magnetic Star I cant wait to see what Russell and David deliver. Bravo BBC.

Sally
This is excellent news. I think that David Tennant will do a brilliant job. But will his Doctor have a Scottish accent or the estuary one he used in Casanova? I suppose that there is absolutely no hope of received pronunciation?

Gary Mack
Its nice to arrive at a Doctor without sixteen years of debate around who it will be. Leave that to the James Bond fans now.

Kevin
Congratulations David, after your role in Quatermass on BBC4, I feel the show is in good hands, I only hope that Christopher portrayal reveals everything 100% as I'm sure there is more to his Doctor than meets the eye & I hope we are not left wondering Again well done & good luck

Bekah Atkins
I think he'll be a good doctor, I have seen him in a few mini-series and I think he has that eccentric carefree attitude that doctor Who needs. I dont reckon he'l be quite as amazing as the current Doctor, but maybe thats just because he'll be different.

Caroline Moir
Christopher Eccleston is a great docter so i hope David Tennant will be as good as him.

Mr R Beale
I love Christopher Eccleston as the new doctor and will miss him when he leaves.

John McIver
Why are you wasting a regeneration? This is very poor indeed.

Grant
I do not think David Tennant can play the new Doctor Who. He is not right for the part.He could play a companion but not the Doctor.

Matthew Neilson
Haven't seen Mr Tennant's work in but have heard good things about Casanova. Either way he's got to be better than Ecclestone who is thoroughly unconvincing as an eccentric - hopefully number 10 won't fall into the trap of pretending to be Tom Baker, unlike everyone since.

Mark Harold
After his seeing his stella performance in the finale to Casanova, I thought to myself that David Tennant will make a tremendous Tenth Doctor - quirky and smiley but able to carry the heavy stuff too - Wicked!

Paul Munro
The announcement of David Tennant as the tenth Doctor is a welcome one, hopefully he'll stay in the role longer than 1 season unlike his predecessor whom is now regarded as badly cast, i'd have preferred an actor with more clout like Richard E. Grant in the role this time but as long as it's still being made i'm happy.

Daniel Hughes
David is an obvious choice as the Doctor. I was so impressed with his role in Casanova [written by new series writer Russell T. Davies] and I knew one day will come across the Daleks and piloting the TARDIS at some point.

Matt Grimsey
Good Choice, something like a youngish Doctor in the Peter Davison model, will be interesting to see his personality traits. One thing - can he hang around for a few years? It would be very unfortunate for the Doctor to run out of Re-Generations and have to end the series prematurely (or indeed make up a silly story where he gets given a new cycle of re-generations, it may be ok for the master to get away with it but this is the Doctor - dont forget the Valeyard either, almost coming to his time too!) Can't wait to see the current guy in mid May when we get it in Australia! Thanks for bringing it back!

Phil Allely
David will make a superb Doctor, his turn in Blackpoool was a suitably quirky role that should prove he will carry the mantle of the Timelord with ease. The regeneration may be a blessing in disguise as new fans will finally get to see what all of the fuss is about. We fans of the original series have seen at least one old doctor morph into his successor, won't it be great to see how it's done in the new series?

i cant believe you find a brill actor for the part as the Dr ,who brings Dr who out of the "cardboard cutout" days and into a brill new life and you dont try and keep him !!! it was good while it lasted ,i think this is a step into the T.A.R.D.I.S and back into the past and i think Billy is brill at playing Rose.At least your keeping 50% of a good show .

Sikander Khan
Real shame to loose Dr #9, but at least #10 is a good actor AND respectful of the past. He won't go around saying things like past Doctors were all posh and female companions were unintelligent stereo types.

chris simmons
i said just after Casanova started that Tennant would be the 10th Doctor, cant believe its this soon. Its a shame we are loosing a great actor, but we are lucky enough to get one thats just as good!

Paul Giles
I think David Tennant is going to make a brilliant timelord. I hope he is signed up for more than one series though.

Mark Willis
People have often said I'd make a great Doctor..... although that's probably a tactful way of letting me know that they think I'm bonkers! Christopher Eccleston has truly covered new ground with the Doctor. I can't fault BBC's choice of both Chris and now David, who I am sure will be brilliant too. I don't have a true "favourite". Reason is, I consider them to be all very good in their different ways. The series has a bright future.

Dan
I think it's another piece of inspired casting for the role of the Doctor. Thank God the producers didn't follow the tabloid favourites and cast a total ham like Richard E Grant or Alan Davies (who appears to be a constant tip for the role purely because he has curly hair).

Tony Dawkins
Having just watched Casanova on BBC, I think David Tennant will make a great Doctor. As for Russell T. Davies, the only problem I can forsee is that he won't be able to keep up the incredibly high standards that he's set himself This present series is classic Dr Who

Lauren
I don't want to be rude to David, because he's a good actor, but I think Christopher Eccleston is better suited for the part of the Doctor.I know he wanted to leave, but I'll miss him.He is really good in Doctor Who. :)

Colin
Hopefully he stays much longer than Chris. Audiences will just be getting used to Chris as he leaves the show which makes it tough for the show to really establish itself. Hopefully the chemistry between Chris and Billie continues with David.

Michael
I'm all for it--personally I'm hoping for a return to the Edwardian look for the Doctor!

mark sedgwick
It's good to see someone who is a big fan take over from Christopher Eccleston who i feel got the new series of Dr Who of to an excellent start. Just hope Dr who now runs for many more years.

Darren Briscoe
After enjoying Davids performances in Blackpool and Casanova I am eagerly awaiting his debut as The Doctor! After 16 yrs of no series life just gets better!

Darren Tree
I am delighted that David Tennant is to be the new Doctor and cannot wait for him to take over. Casanova has been the TV highlight of the year, so roll on the Christmas special!

Bandit_ Aust
The 10th Dr Who? A dream come true... We have only waited 15 years for this, our beloved Dr of whome we all miss...

Sean Jenner
I'm in shock - David Tennant will be the first Doctor younger than me!!

Banksy
An absolutely inspired choice. Anyone who saw him in "Casanova" will know he has the range to tackle the part, and personally I think he has a better handle on the required light and shade than the current Doctor.

Anthony Wilson
To be honest, couldn't be a better choice. Fantasic in everything I've seen him in (Casanova, Quatermass - and that was live!). Looking forward to it immensely. Damn fine choice!

Paul Delaney
I think David will be a superb Doctor as he also a long term fan of the series. Chris Eccleston is going to be a hard act to follow, but if there’s one man fit for the role its David Tennant. Casanova is one of the greatest period pieces of its time & I am sure the next BAFTAs will see overdue honors. His performance in The Quatermass Experiment was also first class & convinced me he was the right guy for the Job. I hope the BBC however fill us in on the main points of the McGann incarnation perhaps with a multi Doctor episode with the brilliant McGann incarnation & his companion Fitz.

Simon Burch
The ONLY choice. I really do think Mr. Tennant will be even better than the excellent Mr. Eccleston. Here's hoping we get proper heart breaking regeneration and not just David in a pair of false ears with his back to the camera.

Chris Melotte
I remember seeing David Tennant in 'Blackpool' and being blown away by his performance and thinking then what a great Doctor Who he'd make. A Perfect choice !

Neil Clarke
I am delighted that David has got the part. He is a brilliant actor as confirmed in BBC's Casanova. He has all the right qualities for the part of the Timelord, he is quirky, funny and unpredictable. Congratulations!

Ivan
I am 39 , and have been a Doctor Who fan for quite some years now , i am collecting Doctor Who on DVD , It is good news that Doctor Who is returning with a new actor , Congratulations to David Tennant who i'm sure will be excellent as the Doctor for series 2 and beyond. Looking forward to seeing them , i will be buying the Tardis Boxset when it's released.

Michael Bentley
How fantastic that David will take up the reins as the new Doctor and he wants to stay for several years. Chris has done a great job and thanks to him and the new found confidence of Doctor Who it seems the series is attracting the very best of acting talent. Fantastic news that Billie Piper is staying too as she is an amazing actress who is firm becoming my favourate companion. Beeb keep up the good work.

Gene
If Casanova was anything to go by, David Tennant will make a welcome addition to the pantheon of Doctor Who actors. I wish him well...

Daniel Billing
I thought David Tennant was great in Casanova. Plenty of guts, emotion, strength, yet very vunreble. I am looking forward very much to seeing him in Doctor Who, as well as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. His profile with kids will be huge by that time I think. It can only be a plus to the new series that he will be familliar with the target audience of the show!

Joe Cassels
This is great news. I love David Tennant's performance in Casanova. I think he'll make a great Doctor.

jon hayward
brilliant news! we watched him in Casanova and thought he was the best (and most watchable)thing about the series!

Matthew Jones
I wish Chris could have done another series but I'm delighted at the prospect of David Tennant in the role. Please, David, sign up for three series at least!

Maz
He is too young

Borusa
I wish David every success in his portrayal of the tenth Doctor, though I must confess to being sorry that Christopher Eccleston has left after so few stories. I felt he still had a lot to offer. How do you get typecast in this sort of role? Just how many people travel round the Universe in a Police Box anyway?

Jocelyn Fitzgerald
It's about time the ladies got a Doctor for us to admire! Seriously though, I think David Tennant is an excellent choice - his screen presence is compelling. He commands authority and respect and glues you to the screen. Brilliant. And his general gorgeousness is just a bonus!

alun
Casanova in a phone box with Billie Piper, are you mad.

Andy Lindsay
Shame the doctor has gone through one of his lives so quickly however David T should be good at the part. Has anyone noticed that he looks a bit like Mike Oldfield? Tubular Daleks? This should be fun.

Beanlsi
It should have been William Shatner.

Alan Paterson
After seeing him doing the live Quatermass I was impressed. I think he'll be great! Does every planet have a Scotland?

Stephen Pitman
It's sad to see Eccleston's doctor go already, but I can't think of a better person to take over the controls of the Tardis then David Tennant! This man was born to play this role! Roll on Christmas specail, Roll on second season, Roll on tenth Doctor!

Matt
Great choice, I just hope Billie Piper stays on for another series. She outshines Eccleston for me.
