From Doctors to Doctor Who.
Dubbed the most influential man in TV soaps, Mal Young is the BBC's controller of continuing series.
Formerly of Channel 4's Brookside, ITV's The Bill and Channel 5's Family Affairs, Liverpool-born Young is now responsible for overseeing such BBC shows as Holby City, Silent Witness, Dalziel and Pascoe, Doctors and Merseybeat. He's worked with Paul McGann before, on legal drama Fish.
The former graphic designer, who didn't get into TV until he was 27, lists country music and "telly" amongst his hobbies.
Young will be serving as executive producer on the new series of Doctor Who, alongside BBC Wales Head of Drama Julie Gardner and Russell T Davies.
