Peter McKinstry: "The Sonic dies! Russell used the word 'fritzed'. It had to be clear whether it was featured in a wide or a close-up shot that the Sonic, at least, this one was no more. The green crystal structure visible under the shattered dome refers back to the TARDIS console crystal. It's the same technology - the TARDIS' little brother. This image became the starting point when designing the inner workings of the Sonic for the visual dictionary."
