Step Back in Time: Fire!
02nd Sep 2010
This week's Step Back in Time acknowledges the anniversary of one of London's defining events - one that happened exactly 344 years ago...
On 2 September, 1666, a small fire started in Pudding Lane, London. It soon spread and became the largest conflagration ever to engulf the capital, destroying thousands of homes, dozens of churches and leaving London in chaos. Amazingly, only a handful of people are thought to have died in the blaze and with much of the city destroyed, planners were able to re-imagine London and the rebuilt metropolis emerged as one of the finest in the world.
But how did the fire start? In the Fifth Doctor story, The Visitation, set in 1666, we're offered an intriguing possibility... This clip is from episode 4 of the adventure and was first broadcast on 23 February, 1982.
