A Cyberman

Doctor Who had been on screen for just three years in 1966 when the production team decided it was time to develop a monster that would rival the Doctor's arch enemy the Daleks. Script editor Gerry Davis devised the Cybermen with real-life scientist, Dr Kit Pedler. Tall, gleaming, metal giants from the planet Mondas, the Cybermen had once been humanoid like us but had developed the technology to replace their dying and diseased body-parts with robotic replacements.

While the human brain remained, the Cybermen were devoid of emotion and you know what that means. Indeed, the number one priority for any Cyberman was to reclaim the planet Earth for their race. Starting with an invasion of our Polar base in their first adventure, The Tenth Planet, the silver giants went on to mount an attack via the moon, the London sewers, several space stations, underground caves and even got caught up with some time-travellers from the 1630s.

Thankfully, the Doctor was always on hand to save the day, armed with his wit, intelligence and humanity.

They were last seen on our screens in 1988 in Silver Nemesis - an adventure which celebrated the show's 25th anniversary. They will return in 2006 to battle David Tennant's Doctor.
