Hiding Behind the Hi-Fi
While the Doctor was off the screen between 1996 and 2005, audio plays were probably the next best thing.
Fan-based company Big Finish persuaded Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann to reprise their roles for a delightful series of adventures. Each split into four episodes like their TV counterparts, the stories were, and still are as they continue to this day, very much in the style of the original show.
The Daleks, Cybermen and Ice Warriors have all returned to menace the Doctor - who is ably supported by much loved companions such as Ace, Peri and Turlough.
Spin-off series Dalek Empire, Gallifrey (featuring Lalla Ward as Romana, Louise Jameson as Leela and John Leeson as K9) and UNIT have also been launched.
Meanwhile, The BBC Radio Collection has been resurrecting the Doctor’s missing past. Adventures that only exist as fans’ audio recordings have been remastered onto CD, accompanied by voiceovers to explain the less obvious on-screen goings-on.
