In The Web PlanetThe ring can can be used to open the doors, and can direct the Zarbi whilst under the influence of a control device hooked up to the TARDIS. In The Daleks' Master Plan the Doctor says that his ring has 'special properties', and he uses it to repair the damaged TARDIS lock.
