Hi All,

We're sorry to have to say that ID&E (Interactive Drama & Entertainment) Division have decided to close all of their Cult messageboards on February 28 2005.

The change, which also includes the DNA Talk Buffy site, is happening as part of the reductions to the Cult site announced at the end of last year.

The Cult Team have asked us to thank everyone who used the h2 messageboards and the DNA Talk Buffy site for being such a lovely, interesting and well-behaved community over the last few years.

This page may help to explain the BBC's explanation of the closure:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pr...ies/2004/12_december/20/plans.shtml

Here are a few quotes taken from the press release, which you can read in full above:

"To achieve the 10% target set by the Governors, the BBC is to employ a range of solutions, including the closure of some sites, the reduction of investment and increased focus in others, as well as savings made through operational efficiencies. "

"The proposed savings, approximately £6m, will be made by the end of the financial year 2005/06 and will be reinvested in new media projects more closely aligned to the purposes of the BBC as set out in Building Public Value. "

"They will build on the BBC's promise, following Philip Graf's review of bbc.co.uk, to reduce potential negative market impact and provide licence fee payers with ever-more distinctive and value-for-money services in line with the stronger, tighter remit set by the Governors."

"Funding for bbc.co.uk/cult will be reduced, with the exception of the Doctor Who section, to support the forthcoming series on BBC ONE, and bbc.co.uk/lifestyle will continue to operate, but with a more modest investment."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pr...ries/2004/11_november/08/graf.shtml

Again, a few relevant quotes below, full statement above:

"The BBC Governors today publish their response to Philip Graf's review of bbc.co.uk, which they submitted to Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport at the end of October."

"It is against this backdrop that the Governors' new remit for bbc.co.uk includes redefined objectives with added emphasis on public value, by creating ever more distinctive, audio visual content.

Furthermore, a new element has been added to the remit, in light of the Public Value Test, which reflects the increased consideration of market impact and assesses this against the potential to build public value.

After applying the principles of the Public Value Test some sites that did not add sufficient public value have already closed and further closures will be announced before Christmas.

The funds released will be reinvested in bbc.co.uk projects more closely aligned to the BBC’s core purposes. "

It's very sad to see the site close.

Traveller in Time tit on his head
"Just what is the policy for people from abroad wanting to pay licence fee?

No matter how I read it I do not see the slot for 'us' to contribute.

Should we register as disabled (by distance) monochrome viewers? Or just donate the annual 4 pound for the internet share? "

Hi

I've already been in touch with the Cult Producer to say that if he wants to send some of his Cult Hitchhiker members over to h2g2 I'm sure they'd be very welcome. smiley

"Are we now going to be flooded by vampires and zombies?"

It's too late. They've been here (h2g2 anyway) for ages, eg: A1982171 and perhaps U225871.

If those pages are, indeed, closing, we should ask to host them on h2g2. The content is valuable.

Surely when a site is to close it means close for input.
The cult Buffy and cult h2g2 sites must surely stay open for access to the data and info the sites hold.

It would be a shame to lose all those links as well - lots of places link to the Cult Hitchhiker's pages. If we can't get the pages, we at least need a redirect.

Shame about Cult Buffy though, especially so close to GW closing.

Further note to add to this:

ID&E have just announced the closure of the following messageboards. The following boards will all close this coming Friday, 28 February 2005.

Celebdaq/Sportdaq
Cult/Cult-Talk Buffy
Drama
Entertainment
EastEnders
Holby General
Neighbours
Teens
TOTP

If you'd like to comment on the closures, please go to the relevant messageboard and use the 'Contact Us' link in the bottom left-hand corner of the messageboard page (Don't use the one on the Hub or h2g2 - that doesn't go to them, they lead to us!).
