This is the Conversation Forum for DNA Announcements << 7 July 2005: New DNA Messageboards 10 February 2005: Talk Buffy to Close Feb 28 2005 >>
We're pleased to announce the launch of a new DNA community; Get Writing: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/ Get Writing is a project which aims to use the BBC's drama and entertainment programmes to inspire people from all walks of life to discover and develop their creative writing skills. The first phase of the project, which includes this new DNA community site, sits alongside BBC's Drama's modern retellings of the Canterbury Tales which started on BBC One last night. After the six Canterbury Tales programmes audiences will be invited to write a short story inspired by the Tales and submit it to Get Writing. Five winning stories will be chosen to be developed and produced for the Radio 4 Afternoon readings slot, these will be read out on air by five actors from the TV series; so Get Writing! http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/competition People will be able to use the Get Writing website to help them develop their creative writing skills generally, through a number of online events, features and learning modules. The Craft is the place where you can refresh your knowledge or pick up some great tips from professional writers on how to improve your work. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/thecraft Members of the community will also be invited to attend one of 12 events being held during September and October that are being run across the country, offering the chance to meet writers from The Canterbury Tales, members of the BBC production team and successful local writers to get hints, tips and inspiration: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/gwevents Enjoy!
>...a chance to meet writers from The Canterbury Tales But Chaucer has been dead for over 600 years Great news about the new site
Oh!!You know what I mean! It's been very popular so far. I think this is going to be a fine addition!
Nice looking site But I'll keep my AWW, thank you
Powered by DNA, the BBC's community website engine
The AWW is a superb addition too Jodan! Powered by the Researchers, the h2g2 Engine....
Hi Peta The AWW's finally as busy as it should be
Jodan Have you seen the opposition ? http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/thecraft Hang on tight to your existing subscribers. Ancient Brit
Pah I'm not too worried
Oh,I dunno Jodan... How often does one get a chance to win a trip to meet with over 600 year-old writers. I wonder if they'll be serving 600 year old cookies and milk with that. Cheers to all involved. I hope some deserving talent finds its just rewards. ~jwf~
HOLY SMOKES!!! This makes me very happy!!! Too bad I'm in the wrong country for watching the new Canterbury Tales!!! <biiiiiggrin>
It's a good site though. * is torn messily in half between Brunel delight and the purple heaven that is Get Writing *
Yeah, it's a very nice site I've been exploring it a bit, and I expected a volunteer scheme on this one (greeters at least) Is this one of the sites that doesn't use volunteers?
This site is integrated into BBCi and is 'Powered by DNA, the BBC's community website engine'. It may well be the first of a new breed of DNA sites that tries to dissociate itself from h2g2. The only connection to h2g2 in particular and DNA in general using the site's links seems to be :- LINKS - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/links Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy This community website aims to reproduce the titular guide with content from the public on Life, The Universe and Everything. A must for non-fiction writers. Could it be that using h2g2's volunteer and welcoming system causes more problems that it solves with regard to DNA sites having specific objectives. It is worth noting that the BBCi Community page now has a specific link to h2g2 and Messageboards ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/messageboards/ ) - Daily conversations in the UK's largest community - also has a link to 'h2g2' in the right hand column.
Look around a bit more - Get Writing's documentation mentions Advisers and Mentors, which sounds a lot like two volunteer schemes to me (especially since they say they're members of the community). They don't see to have it properly set up yet though, give it time.
Yes sir, we'll give it time!!! I can only give it time, really... YEEEHAH!!!! Maybe someday I'll look at the site...
The current version of the description from /dna/getwriting/gtgetstarted is: "How do I meet people? The best way to get to know other people is to Get Talking! You are certain to make friends by feeding back on other people's writing at the Review Circles. If you give good, balanced, specific feedback regularly, you may find yourself invited to be an Adviser or a Mentor, at which point everyone will want to be your friend!" That now means not volunteers in one sense (though still voluntary in the unpaid and unforced sense).
Aaah, so they're doing it by picking people out... * s back to Get Writing *
Still smacks of an attempted coup to me. Take care boots
It is a tricky place to be ( getwriting ) once you have started writing there, there is no way to logoff. The matter is I just followed some links from this thread to get writing, now I can't stop without coming back here? It is like you have to drop your pencils in the HUB before you leave.
