Candle painting

  • Brian Willis on Friday, 17th May 2002

I wonder if that story about Percy French drawing a picture in wax on a plate is accurate? I suspect it has become confused with drawing in the smoke of a candle.

As children we used to hold a plate upside down over a lit candle. The smoke would blacken the plate. Using a brush, our finger, or a dead matchstick we would then draw mountains in the black and clean away the “sky” area to once again reveal the white plate. We would then return the plate over the candle to repeat the process. This we did several times and each successive layer of black left on the plate would become darker and darker. Giving a wonderful landscape of serried grey mountains that receded into the distance.
Must try that again one day. I’ll let you see the result.
