Also in Dalkey?

  • Mercury on Wednesday, 24th April 2002

I went to Dalkey as a boy around the early sixties. There was an ice cream shop there called McMcasters. I'm very sure about this. Could it be another branch of the same family?? Does anyone know?

    Hi Mercury
Don't know but I will be passing the man's house after I finish here at night school in Ballymoney (Web site design) and will nip in and ask him. My guess is no- as I think these McMasters finished selling ice-cream by the 1950's.
You don't record itinerant fiddlers in Ballykelly do you?
    Regards

    Hi Mercury,
Well I have checked and that ice-cream shop in Dalkey had no connection with the John McMaster featured on the Sense of Place site. Apart from the "on the road" horse and lorry ice cream sales, they only had the one shop (which also sold groceries) and that was in Meetinghouse Street Ballymoney Co. Antrim

I too went to Dalkey in the very early 60s as a youngster with my parents. We stayed in a small caravan park there which I think was owned by a family called the Fitzpatricks. There was definitely an Ice-Cream shop in the Village but I remember it as "Masters". Could this be the same one? There were very few shops or businesses there in those days and I'm fairly sure about the ice-cream shop... If anyone has any more details I'd certainly love to know.
