Pastie Supper on Wednesday, 18th June 2003
Yep there was a corner shop right next to my primary school just like everywhere else. They must have made a fortune out of the schoolkids. We all only had a penny or two to spend in old money (before we went dismal) but we were in it every lunchhour to get our blackjacks and gobstoppers and stuff like that. We werent allowd chewinggum in school so we had to hide that. They also sold yellowman which I havent seen for years now. thinking about it now it was like the dark ages. soft drinks werent nearly as popular as now and lemonade only came in big glass bottles I think. As far as I can remember there were only a few types of chocolate bar too instead of the hundreds we get now. Our wee shop had a big brass till with painted white flags that popped up to tell you the price and it rang a bell. the whole shop was lit by one bare bulb and the sweety jars went all the way upto the ceiling. Im' sure they sold lots of other things like soap and all but all I remember was the sweets really. What a simple life we had as kids, we were dead happy though.
