Hi I'm a librarian (library assistant) in my 30's and I have a truly great love of Science Fiction. The things I ache most for are 70's Science Fiction films, British TV SF and the science fiction comic 2000AD.
It was the 70's when everything seemed to fall into place for SF in film. They had a genuine intelligence behind them, which was married to an unrestrained artistic urge. Though they still managed to entertain audiences. Perhaps 2001: A Space Oddysey had been the catalyst, though of course, great SF movies didn't start then (see the Day the Earth Caught Fire). But there was something about those seventies movies. Silent Running, Planet of the Apes, the Omega Man, THX 1138, Dark Star, Westworld, Rollerball, The Final Programme, A Clockwork Orange, Logan's Run, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Soylent Green... All of them had something to say about our future, about where we were and where we might be going. An era which seemed to be largely drawn to an end with Star Wars. Spectacle, not social commentary has become the most important thing, and while there certainly have been good SF movies made since, I think hat the 1970's was truly their era.
British TV SF... sigh... we've done it so well in the past, but it seemed like in the 80's it would go terminally out of fashion. Science Fiction for adults, to be watched by a mainstream audience with ideas and genuine thrills. Think Survivors, Quatermass, A for Andromeda. Even the kids SF of yesterday looks grown up when viewed today. I'd love to see new drama of that quality and was heartened by the BBC's remakes of Quatermass Experiment and A for Andromeda. If only we could have new work of that quality to chart our current uncertain future.
Finally 2000AD. I've written on this already, but it really did open up new worlkds for me in the 80's and I've followed the writers of that comic to this day.
I currently write and publish my own comics, inspired by the above to continue looking to the future.
Thanks to the BBC for this Science Fiction week!
