Bester wrote the two best sf novels of the 50s-possibly ever. The only writer to successfully combine literary fiction skills with pulp plots, retaining all the fun of heavy Modernist literatur and the serious pretensions of pulp.
At age 9, then 12, then regularly ever since. I'd read that he was the best writer in Science Fiction. I found out they were right!
It generated a real love of typographical tricks in writing-after this, Joyce and Sterne were easy! it combined the flair and wit of Dickens, the space opera of Doc Smith, and the brilliant use of language of Del;any or Ellison. He wrote too little sf-but ALL of it was brilliant.
