I discovered Farscape because it was on BBC2 at 6:45 - same time as Buffy, but I didn't really *really* watch it until we had the DVDs when I was about 17, at which point I sat down and watched the whole from the beginning (everything made a lot more sense then). I'd never seen anything quite like it - aliens with more than lumpy foreheads and pointy ears, a main character who spends a large part of the show being insane, and a living ship. Even in its more off-the-wall moments, Farscape's characters were always immensely watchable and you could relate to them, whether they had blue skin or tentacles. Farscape showed me what science fiction could be...and how important pop culture was to ultimate survival. It also provided, in Aeryn Sun, a lead female character who fell in love with the male lead, but was still a soldier, still very much her own person - someone not to be messed with.
