Joss Whedon

2002

TV: Firefly.
Creator: Joss Whedon

Encapsulated. Would you recommend this? why?

Joss Whedon is one of the greatest modern TV writers and this series is his under-rated masterpiece.

Time and Space: When and where I first encountered it

I first saw this about 5 years ago - so I would have been 25.

Recollection and revelations

My boyfriend (now husband) suggested I watch his DVD box set - 'it's by the same bloke who wrote Angel', were his words to convince me.

I watched it, loved it and immediately went on a continuing mission to convert everyone else I know into 'Browncoats' (hard-core Firefly fans)...

Firefly took everything I thought I knew about sci-fi and turned it upside down and inside out - I rediscovered the basic draw of the genre and became completely addicted all over again.

Before this...

Angel

Joss Whedon's spin-off from 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', following her former boyfriend - 200-year-old vampire Angel - into his new life in Los Angeles.

A brilliant series with great characters but the ending was rather disappointing.

After This

Serenity

Follow up film to Joss Whedon's criminally short-lived series 'Firefly'.

Brilliant as a stand alone story, the film answered questions left open by the series within a brand new story arc.

Excellent performances throughout - especially from Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Operative.
