Fascinating, captain

TV: Star Trek: The Original Series.
Creator: Gene Roddenberry

Encapsulated. Would you recommend this? why?

Oh, yes. If you've never seen The Orginal Series (pardon me, but which planet have you been on?) then boldly go and watch it. It is one of the defining milestones of SF television.

Time and Space: When and where I first encountered it

1960s I suppose. I would have been in my 20s, and immediately fell madly in love with Mr Spock - the most gorgeous 'alien' ever. I know most women preferred Captain Kirk, but he was a wimp and was always soppily snogging all the female aliens and humans alike. How unprofessional and over-emotional, Captain.

Recollection and revelations

I think Star Trek changed everyone's view of the world, didn't it? Is there anyone at all out there who can't quote at least something from it? It's not dead, Jim! It's the USA's second greatest contribution to the Space Age (after landing on the moon). I can't remember how I discovered it, but suddenly everyone was watching it. We all knew it was corny, and the cheap sets lurched and creaked, but it didn't matter.

Before this...

The Quatermass Experiment

nerve-jangling, ground-breaking SF at its best

After This

Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Red Dwarf, HHGG

Anything SF was leapt upon and devoured by me. From H G Wells and Frankenstein to Torchwood and Terry Pratchett, I remain a complete fanatic
