In Depth

The Monsters

Monsters both real and faked terrorise a lakeside community.

A four-part BBC1 serial from writers Evelyn Frazer and Vincent Tilsey, directed by Mervyn Pinfield - who carried over his skill with studio-bound special effets to the William Hartnell seasons of Doctor Who.

Honeymooning scientist William Greene and his wife Elizabeth WEaver search for a Loch Ness style-monster in a mysterious lake in the north of England, and discover foreign villain Robert Harris and his infiltrating force of miniature submarines.

The monsters also show up, and the serial takes an ecological tack with a threat to the survival of humanity.

Sadly, the tapes of the serial were wiped by the BBC in the 1960s, and only a short clip now exists.

Work nominated by emmenngee.
