Counterstrike
An alien secretly works to defend the Earth.
This Avengers-like thriller was typical of the kind of science fantasy the BBC excelled at in the 60s and 70s.
Brooding Jon Finch, just two years away from a modest shot at stardom with lead roles in Roman Polanski's Macbeth and Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy, plays Simon King.
An intergalactic secret agent, King has been sent to Earth by a sort of cosmic United Nations to prevent an alien invasion. Referred to as Centaurans, these invaders hail from a dying planet and hope to make the Earth their own by infiltrating and wrecking society from within.
A clever premise, this avoided the need for the costly effects that the standard BBC budget couldn't have matched. Independence Day, it is not.
