Journey into Space
Fondly remembered space-bound BBC radio series that took the nation - and then the world - by storm.
It's no surprise that science fiction provided the basis for an extremely popular and long-running British radio series. It's just odd that it took until the 1950s to do so. First broadcast as a succinct six-parter, Journey into Space's popularity was such that it was hurriedly extended to 18 episodes, and returned for a further two series, totalling 58 episodes in all.
With "chocks-away" pilot Jet Morgan as its protagonist, Journey into Space was Dan Dare on the airwaves. But despite its parochial outlook, the series was a hit worldwide: it’s been translated into 17 languages and broadcast in 22 countries.
As science fiction goes, its aspirations were modest. Series one, A Tale of the Future, detailed a trip to the moon; series two, The Red Planet, took the adventurers as far as Mars; and they ventured little further afield in series three, The World in Peril.
